I noted a number of comments here stressing weaning oneself off of Topamax. I've been on 100 mg per day since Oct 28. After wreaking havoc w/ my short term memory & forgetting names of coworkers I've known for 7 years I went back to neuro yesterday to go another route.

Long story short (sorry about all that) he said I could simply stop the Topamax, that I didn't not need to wean myself off. I didn't challenge the doctor on this but did ask twice. I only had expectations to the contrary based on what I've learned on this website. I haven't taken a Topamax since Sunday evening.

Hmmmmmmm. You know I'm not a doctor and can't give medical advice, BUT everything I've seen on Topamax, including the prescribing information, says that it should NOT be abruptly discontinued. In one of the threads here about Topamax, we have someone who started having seizures from discontinuing it all at once.

How long have you been seeing this doctor? What kind of doctor? I find this worrisome.

Dr. Evans, Neurologist out of Houston. I came up with his name from this website some time back. I'm quite impressed with him, his credentials are impeccable.

I've seen Dr. Evans since last October. I went in the hospital a few days under his care. I had gone to see him, had a headache that day, vomited profusely in his office, which happened to be next door to the hospital. They administered a migraine drug that can only be given intravenously (3 letters, don't recall) for a couple of days until headache dissipated for 24 hours straight.

Seen/diagnosed w/migraine by 2 other neurologists prior.

Anyway, going to change over to Bystolic as a preventative. I was suffering quite a bit of short-term memory loss w/ the Topamax.

I just finished weaning off topamax too. My migraine specialist had me do 4 days at 50 mg, then 4 days at 25 mg, then stop. He said you don't have to take quite a long as they recommend but still had me do it a little at a time. I figure it can't hurt to wean off as recommended. I'm not a doctor though. I assume you asked him about the risks of stopping cold turkey. I would probably choose to titrate down anyway for safety's sake. That's my two cents worth.

I fully agree w/ better safe than sorry, weaning off like you suggest certainly wouldn't hurt anything.

Thanks Smiler

Although I've not seen Dr. Evans for treatment, I do know him and have a great deal of respect for him. It could also have something to do with other meds you're taking.

Whatever you do, do call his office if you have any problems discontinuing the Topamax. OK?

Oh, and next time you see him, please give him my best?

Pugster, this is off topic but my hubby and I are nuts for pugs! You have two? I can't quite see in your picture.

Thanks! I haven't seen Dr. Evans as a doctor personally, but have had good comments about him. Talking with him at conferences, he's always very nice and certainly knows a great deal.

Hope you're feeling better!

Yes, we have 2 wonderful pugs. And they have a lot of fun with each other which you may be able to see in the picture. I've tried to attach another picture, it shows how they wait for me to come home every day, looking out on the driveway.
