Hi Teri, I noticed in another thread that Jamie said that she was taking Diamox for weather-related migraines and she also mentioned that you took this med as well. When I googled it, I learned that it was an anticonvulsant used to control seizures in the treatment of epilepsy and that it was useful for migraines with "vestibular manifestations".
My question is: is this med being used as some of the other epilepsy meds are now (i.e. topamax)?, or is it just beneficial if someone has the "vestibular manifestations"? Of course I know that I would have to discuss all this with my doctor, but since I don't presently have a headache specialist, it's pretty much up to me to suggest the direction of any new meds (then she researches them). Topamax is starting to peter out for me, and weather-related migraines are still my worst problem, so this seems to be an interesting area of investigation for me right now. (Of course, I don't even know if Diamox is available in Canada yet, but I thought I'd check it out with you as a first resort). Thanks for any info you might be able to give me on this, Teri. As always, I'm so very grateful for all that you do for us and all that I have learned from you!! Liz |

Hi Liz,
Teri is out of town this week so I thought I would give my two cents worth. I beleive Teri takes Diamox for PTC(pseudotumor cerebri) to keep the intracranial pressure down. I use methazolimide a drug similar to diamox for the same reason. They are used to treat seizures and some off-label uses like PTC and other things. Let me see what I can find out about "vestibular manifestations" for you. OK? |

Liz,
I don't know about Canadian availability. The generic name is acetazolamide. Although Diamox is listed as an antiseizure med, I've seldom seen it used as such. It was first prescribed for me for IIH (Psuedotumor Cerebri). My Migraine doctor and I consulted with my ophthalmologist when choosing a medication for the IIH, and chose Diamox because it's also prescribed for glaucoma. I do know several people who take it when they know a weather front is moving through or before flying to prevent weather and altitude triggered Migraines. Don't know how much this has helped, but hope it's at least given you basics to discuss with your doctor. ![]() Teri Robert Lead Expert, MyMigraineConnection terimmc@helpforheadaches.com

Thanks, Teri. I'll talk to my pharmacist first to determine availability. And, then, if appropriate, I'll follow up with my doctor.
