hey teri, my neuro wants to give me a nerve block using a q-tip with stuff on the end of it that goes up my nose. i guess it touches a nerve up there. have you heard of this? it has a long name that i don't remember. i go in on oct 30th for it. im a little nervous about it cause i can't find any info about it.

Hey, Jennifer,

That's called a sphenopalatine ganglion block. I've never had it done before, but I've talked with a few people who have. It helped some, but not everyone. If I remember correctly it's generally lidocaine on the swab.

i wish the study was done on more migraine patients. there was only one in the study. and it was on a pregnant woman! i would of given my right arm for another option while i was pregnant.
it says they were able to do it to themselves at home after a few treatments by the dr. interesting. i wonder why more dr.s aren't doing it?

I don't know exactly why this isn't done more, but if I had to guess, I'd say it might be that it's not effective for very long and lidocaine can be very irritating.

I haven't heard about people doing it with swabs at home, but have known a couple of people to try lidocaine nose drops.
