Fledgling |
So my neurologist agrees that my birth control pills are definitely adding to the frequency of my migraines, especially since they seem to happen the most during the week of sugar pills and the week following, but then the 2 weeks in the middle seem to be relatively migraine-free. (Silly me...this has been going on for nearly 2 years, and I've only JUST made the timing connection by logging my symptoms!) So my new gynecologist switched me from Microgestin (my current bc) to Brevicon, which has a higher estrogen dose. It still gives me a period, but she hopes that the higher estrogen levels will help. I hope so!
The only problem is, I'm 2 days into taking the new pills and already I can FEEL a migraine developing. Last night I was sensitive to lights and was getting dizzy with movement, and I didn't sleep well at all. I feel like I have a baby migraine today that might develop, and am concerned it'll get worse with the next pill I take later tonight. I kind of expected this might happen because it's a change in hormones, and that ALWAYS seems to set off a migraine. My question is, has anyone here who has switched bc pills experienced migraines at the beginning when they first switch, and for how long does it last? How long should I chalk it up to just switching before I rule it out as "this medication is making it worse?" Which bc pills have worked for you guys with hormonal migraines? -- Note: the IUD devices are not an option for me at the moment, as I've never had children before (and would possibly like to in the next few years...plus, I don't think I could handle the pain of the implantation!). Going off a pill completely is also a last resort, as we're not ready for kids just YET, and I still got migraines and AWFUL cramps that had me on the floor all day crying without it..the bc pills have helped that aspect of things and regulated my cycle. |

Birth control pills in general tend to affect many migraineurs. I think it's usually due to the fact that they tweak the hormone levels. I'd imagine switching to a different brand would rile up the hormones some more initially, which could affect your migraines. Whether or not it will settle out over time on this new pill is just that, a matter of time.
