Neuro appt. 19 June. Shall I ask him for a letter to my workplace that I need full-spectrum fluorescent bulbs in both my classrooms next year?

1) There is little or no cost difference between the bulbs at Lowes.
2) Fluorescent bulbs are a definite trigger for me.
3) I believe fluorescent bulbs are implicated in triggering untoward behaviors in students with ADD, ADHD, and ED. Such untoward behaviors are a stackable trigger for me. (I'll research this one before I present it to him. No proof and I'll leave it out.)

What say y'all?

R.

I say there's no harm at all in asking for such a letter, and in working to get your district to comply, especially since this is potentially easy accommodation with will cost them next to nothing to do. All they have to do is swap out bulbs. Go for it!

I'm with Droolie - no harm in asking, and potentially a lot less head pain for you! Good luck to you.

Definitely ask him! I recently asked my doctor for a letter for my workplace about my extreme sensitivity to light. I was much more nervous about asking for it than I needed to.

My doctor's office already had a basic letter that they had used for others and customized it to my needs. It was much easier than I ever would have imagined.

Good Luck!

I agree that doctors are usually glad to help in any way they can, and you should go ahead and ask.

Realize, however, that purchasing is probably done through the district office, and there might not be anything your principal can do. And I'm guessing that the district purchasing agent couldn't be bothered.

However, you might think about buying the bulbs yourself. It's an expensive option, but that might be easier to get.

Good luck!

I say "Go for it, too!!". You can also mention Irlen syndrom which is effected by fluorescent lights.

Welcome, Snickers! My doc probably has a letter much like your doc. Good idea! Thanks for suggestion.

Dar, I know I don't have Irlen Syndrome, as I'm a speed reader with a high comprehension rate and an excellent speller. Thanks for the suggestion, though. I strongly suspect several of my students have Irlen Syndrome!

Gret, you are probably right about purchasing. But, if I get that letter in "now", perhaps my school can arrange for purchasing the bulbs by August. I can send a copy of the letter to my District Office, which is within walking distance of my school.

On my lousy pay, I just can't afford $240 for 8 cases of the bulbs. I'll see if my health insurance would reimburse me. Or, could this be a Workers' Comp issue? (Grumble, grumble, grouse, grouse! Why should my insurance or I have to pay for an accomodation for me? Or, am I being too much of a "liberal/commie/pinko"?)

Happy Summer to All,

Rebecca

Let us know what your results are. I never dared to request any accommodation at any job, because from my experience that once you start asking for accommodations they see you as a "liability" and look for excuses to get you out & start looking at your work more closely... this has happened to me & other teachers... maybe if you have tenure, you'll be safer (do you?).

I tried to get get a job at a place (extremely competative) that I worked for before because they dont use flourescents, only receeded incandescents & lots of windows... it was one of the only places that was aware that children w/ AD/HD, Asperger's, Sensory Processing Disorders, Migraines and Seizures were triggered by flourescents.

It's amazing that there is such a lack of awareness.
