I tried calling my doctor yesterday but never got a return call. Nice. So I am here hoping someone has had the same experience or knows about what I went thru. I woke yesterday knowing I was going to have quite a migraine. Saw my "pixie dust"{little sparkling lights} and was dizzy, etc, all my typical auras I get. Then the vision in my right eye just went. Gone. Scared the heck out of me. It came back, after a few seconds, but still, it has never happened before. It happened several times yesterday, so I called my neuro, and well, here I am. I ended up getting quite the migraine. This morning I have what I call a hangover headache, I feel like I have been drinking very heavily yesterday, and feel kinda loopy, not in a good way either. So I looked up basilar migraine again, which is what I have, and it says about temporary blindness. Is it possible to develop new auras?I hope somone knows something because it scared me to death, I thought I was going blind. I would really have appreciated a phone call from the doctor!!!!!!! Mad

This happened to me for the first time last year and scared the you what out of me too! It was almost as if someone just "unplugged" my eye. I just couldn't see out of that eye. At all. Really weird. The vision loss didn't last all that long, probably 15 minutes or so the first time and then it returned later, after one heck of a whopper of a migraine had started. It is something that can happen with aura. You might want to talk about it w/ your neurologist.

I now know that if I lose my vision (it's only ever in one eye, just like I'll get weak and tingly on just one side of my body) that the migraine will be a particularly bad one.

I hope you feel better!

The first time I ever remember getting what I now know was a Migraine, I had a similar symptom. At first, it seemed like my vision had been 'cut in two' and then moved over by about a quarter inch. I literally could not read a single word and couldn't look at TV or anything without this extremely weird distortion.

It threw me. I thought I was going nuts. I had no pain and thought, "What in the world is this??" Then my visual field started narrowing to an odd tunnel effect until I completely lost my vision in both eyes. I was totally freaking out and called my older sister. I remembered she had told me she had some weird 'pseudo-tumor' thingy and I wanted to ask her what her symptoms were.

Right after my vision completely disappeared, it came back along with a crushing headache I'd never had before in my life. All my visual symptoms were gone which relieved me, but I was confused by my head pain. I'd never heard of Migraines before and didn't know until years later even what that was. (This was in the early 90's before I was even on the internet.) I had that kind of Migraine so rarely that I didn't even know what to think. I haven't ever had those exact symptoms again, as a matter of fact.

After that, I had what I thought were 'sinus' headaches which were much less in intensity--though still painful--for years until being diagnosed in 2005. It's amazing what we can through ignorantly, isn't it?

What a scary thing to have happen. While we can't diagnose because we are not medical professionals, we can give you information.

Basilar-Type Migraine may have some very frightening aura symptoms, including temporary blindness. If in fact you do have BTM, it is important to be treated properly by a knowledgeable doctor. Certain medications should not be used to treat this Migraine - like triptans and ergotamines.

Has he called you back yet? Is it time for a new doctor? Try this quiz?

Finally heard from the doctor yesterday afternoon. Apparently I pressed the wrong button and left a message, should have pressed #2 and instead pressed #3, what a pain. Anyway, you can develop new auras, and it was nothing but a new aura. The most frightening one at that! He assured me it would be ok, but it was still very scary to just have your vision go away. Not his fault, but still scary. Now I know to press2! Kind of hard to pay full attention to a stupid recording when you are freaking out! But I do feel alot better. Thank you all for the replies Blinking
