Folks,

We're getting too many posts tripping the word filters. Part of keeping this forum "safe" is ensuring that children can read it without finding language that their parents don't want them to use or be exposed to.

One word that seems to be a problem is one that you might think of when you think of eating a lollipop, but that's not how it's being used.

Another issue is using a word that is obviously inappropriate but substituting another character for one or two of the letters in the word. That's no better than using the actual word.

The moderators and I don't want to scold or fuss, but PLEASE be more careful? Pretty please?

Thanks, Teri, for the important reminder.

It's important to keep this space safe for children, and it's also nice to have someplace we can go where we actually have to use some creativity to express ourselves instead of just relying on the words and phrases we hear too often everywhere else. My high school English teacher used to tell us cursing is "an ugly and lazy use of language." I can be as ugly or lazy as anyone else, but it's good to have someplace where standards are upheld!

Another thing that will trigger the language filter--linking to Wikipedia! Razzer

I got in trouble with the language filter for wanting to post an thread about milk and protein glutamate. I had a link to a Wiki article and lo and behold! The language filter caught it!

Nancy cleared it all up for me. Wiki just isn't a well-substantiated enough source and the decision had been made to not allow links to it. Didn't know! FYI

Sorry the filter caused you a problem. But, not only is much Wikipedia info uncited, people go in and vandalize pages by changing things and deliberately putting up false information all too frequently. Pages can be fine one minute and totally wrong the next. It's just so unreliable.

Teri-Thanks for the reminder! I know sometimes it is easy to forget what is considered appropriate language and what isn't so I gauge my posts by what I say in front of my daughter and what my kids are allowed to say to each other.

Thanx Group Hug

Not that my daughter uses bad language, but I've also told her that people that do are lazy and they just aren't intelligent enough to express themselves properly!

THANK YOU! I do not know how many times I tell my children, 2 of which are teenagers, that swearing is just the lazy way out. You might think it is cool but it just shows you are to lazy or do not care enough about your image to try.

I hear you, Stacy. There are times when I'm really not sure if a particular would is appropriate or not. That's when I run the words by my daughter in-law and Nancy. Nancy has teenagers, and the daughter in-law who helps me out has kids from four to 12. Between them, we figure it out. It's been long enough since we had kids at home that I figure it better to get feedback.

Teri,

Thank you so much for the welcome reminder. I hope I haven't been one of the offenders. Andy and I don't have children so we are less conscious of our language than we should be. You have created a safe and nurturing space here for all of us and maintaining its inclusiveness and welcome should be one of our highest priorities.

You're an angel as I've said many times over. Angel

(PS. I haven't seen you on the board much lately. Hope you're okay and just busy!!)

(I'm 55, have had severe migraines for over 4 years due to menopause, plus I have fibromyalgia. I take Imitrex plus Anaprox as an abortive and am working with my migraine specialist to find a preventive. I keep a detailed migraine diary and have made significant lifestyle changes to reduce my risk of migraines.)

Laura Sue,

You're very welcome. I know what you mean about not having children -- ours are grown and out of the house. Now I find that I have to watch myself around our grandchildren AND here.

Yes, I'm OK. Thank you! I've been very busy, plus my computer died. Having to get and set up a new computer slowed me down a lot. I'm getting back into the swing of things this week. Of course, it's not all bad. I love my new computer AND the two 22" monitors I set up on it. Blinking

I really like our no-profanity policy. I feel it contributes to the sense of safety we all have about this forum. It also communicates that we have some standards, and that we agree to communicate with each other in an atmosphere of mutual respect. I think it benefits all of us, not just children.

Wow, 22 inch monitors? I think I have monitor envy! Sounds great. And yeah, setting up a new computer takes an incredible amount of time, doesn't it.
