I just wanted to say thanks to the forum as a whole... after reading here on a few threads about talking to your employers about your medical condition, I think an article about how to do so? I read a few stories about it not going well... and a few notes about employers who knew/understood employees situations and were understanding. It occurred to me that while my boss kinda knew what was going on with me and has been uber--accommodating for time off, I've never really explained everything to them. We're a pretty small office and the owners were acquaintances of mine before I started working here so I was lucky and they were both in this afternoon so I popped in and asked for a few minutes when they had a chance to talk.
I explained my EDS diagnosis to them, and in brief my current treatments, the fact that I'm getting a new neuro and might branch out to SF if needed... I also informed them of my Topamax and the fact that I'm having my coworker proof some emails for me on my bad days. It was such a good conversation! They were so glad I had taken the initiative to talk to them, and it was nice to have the reassurance that they felt like I was still doing a great job, as I'd been feeling guilty for being gone so often for appts. I explained my theories on taking full days off instead of half days so I could fit in more appts and so on... It was nice to talk about our shared faith as well and I know they've been praying for me. I knew they'd have said something if they were really unhappy about something but it was really liberating to have cleared the air on the subject! Thanks for the push... via reading! lol
Candace- I too have very understanding employers. We are also a small group of people working together. I think we're very blessed and fortunate to have these people behind us! I try very hard to keep things on a professional level as much as possible, and don't take any time off unless I absolutely have to. When I have they have been so understanding and sensitive. I'm happy for you that your work situation has been so positive in this respect!
Nutcracker--I'd read that article too... it was just a culmination of everything that made me feel like I should actually talk to them. I don't think anyone here actually gets migraines... and I don't really know what I have going on, and if they are migraines yet or not... but my employers did spend a month at the hospital practically when their last baby was born and continue to tend to health concerns, so they get health concerns. They're all about keep chipping away at it, keep trying... they even brought up traveling to see a specialist! So I know they'll be behind me all the way. I'm just so glad that I bothered to have the conversation... I just would have kept feeling guilty for every minute I was away... nervous that they were feeling irritated or wondering why I was away so much... nice to have the air clear between us.
