Hey everyone,
Has anyone tried doing work at home, doing Transcription services? I'm currently out on disability for the next 5 weeks and looking to find a more migraines friendly job after that. After the last 3 months of migraines and feeling like my job was at jeopardy. I want some security and some sense of safety. Right now i feel like i have very little control. I have heard in the past about some Migrainer’s working for Transcription company’s like Tigerfish and Mountain West. I have applied at one company, my current job takes a lot of data entry with relatively good scores (high 90s). I am currently living with my parents and if I could make 200-600 a month, I would be more than ok while I am getting my migraines settled. I don't know if i would even make that. Any feedback or suggestions? |

Are you talking medical billing wise?
I know that there are companies out there, although I am not familiar with the ones you mentioned. My dad used to do it, but I don't know how successful it was. I do medical billing full time at an office now, I know there are companies out there, but you have to invest in some of the software, forms, things like that. If that is what you are thinking of though, I might be able to lead you in the right direction.... Matt,
When I saw "transcription" I was thinking of the transcription of medical reports for hospital or clinic medical records (history and physicials, consultations, operative reports) that type of thing. If that is what you are talking about, there is a significant learning curve due to the medical terminology used. My background is all in Health Information Management. In the old days we had to spend 200 hours transcribing (I still can't type). I had to cover for a transcriptionist one day at a very small hospital where we did very simple surgery (hernia repair, appendectomies, an occational c-section) and I could not tell the type of suture material the doctor had used as he dictated. It was common matterial, but it was garbled (he was eating as he dictated) and I could not understand it. The upside to transcription is a great deal of it is now done remotely from a hospital or clinic. The downside is depending on your migraine disease, looking a computer screen could be a challange for you. Regular monitors do have brightness and contrast settings that do help. Hope that helps Cindy |

Eileen and Cindy,
Actually I'm not talking to medical per say- mountain west is more document coding, paying .35 cents for every audio min starting. I have considered medical billing but I'm not sure if I could handle the medical lingo... I do work in insurance but that doesn't mean I know any of the terms |

Found their website, it looks interesting. Too bad my typing is so horrid!! I would be worth looking into, sounds like there is some investment of equipment, but not loads. How "techy" are you if things go wrong with programs and such?
Take care Matt, Cindy |

I'm pretty techy, i'm good at figuring things out. I would have to invest 60-100 into a pedal if things worked out. I'm curious if I could make enough off it. My typing is far from perfect, but fast. I know computer work isn't always the best for those with migraines. But, I've worked with computers for the last year and 3 months, and at least at home I'd have better lighting! I applied to mountain west, see if i hear back from them. I'm also looking in to mystery shops ect. In a ideal situation, I would like i be able to make enough money working from home to cover my basic bills and save while I'm getting everything stabilized . |
