I was sitting in my living room this weekend and feeling well when I had a really bad dizzy spell. I got up and went to my bed to sleep. About an hour later I was numb in my right leg, right arm and right side of face... Very dizzy no headache. I went to the emergency room and they said along with migraines, I also have atypical migraines with neurological symptoms. They had a neurologist visit with me before discharging me. Is this a common thing??? They said it could be days to weeks before my numbness goes away! It freaks me out. They set me up with another appt. with my regular neurologist...

MommyRhys, it looks like Laura gave you some good information. I'll also link you to our index page for types of migraines and headaches, so you can look at all the information we have on the different diagnoses. Perhaps you can bring some information with you to your appointment with your neuro. When do you see him again?

Hello:

I was recently hospitalized because I woke up one morning and was having stroke like symptoms of slurred speech. They tested me for a stroke and then localized seizures that just effected my speech. Turns out I was having migraine auras. No migraine headaches, just the auras. I used to get the headaches all the times. Sometimes aura result in speech loss for a while and other stuff. My doctors husband had one where he drove around for 3 hours b/c he couldn't remember his way home. I'm on topomax now for 5 days. I'll let you know how it goes.

You did the right thing in seeking medical help - whenever you have a new neurological symptom you should check it out thoroughly.

It sounds like a fairly normal hemiplegic migraine (call it what you like, atypical migraine or whatever), but that dizziness followed by the numbness and anything else that happened is usually hemiplegic.

As a veteran of such attacks, I can tell you that it's not unusual for the weakness and numbness to hang around in some form or another for quite some time. You don't have to worry about it unless it gets worse again. It will gradually wear off. Mine happens on my left side, so I just don't pick up anything breakable on that side. It will come back. For some reason that's a symptom that takes your brain awhile to recover from.

If you get the dizziness again and it's not going away, there are all sorts of things you can get in the ER (and for home) that will stop the dizziness or vertigo. That will help with sleep, vomiting, and the general discomfort of feeling like the room is spinning!

There are plenty of us on the forum who have these symptoms. Look around and you'll see.

I have hemiplegic migraines too. Most of mine are also "silent" and include vertigo and have lasted anywhere from a couple days to as long as 6 weeks (the residual weakness, numbness etc) Blech. Sorry you're having to go through all that. No fun.

Hi,

Have you had a brain MRI or has your neuro order one yet?

I hope things are going well for you now.

Be well,

Hi there. Not sure if you are still seeking some thoughts on your "attack" but if so...here's my experience of vestibular migraine.

Back in August 07 - sudden right-side lurch and sense of creeping numbness up back of head. Onset of on-off dizzy spasms, sense of things moving away from me, some 180degree spins, light-headedness, full ears, tinnitus, sense of novacaine wearing off from my right-side (head), nausea, photosensitivity, jumping vision....8 weeks off work. Various suggestions ranging from panic attack, labrynthitis, stress....MRI scan, ENT trips....no help. Finally referred to National Neurology hospital in London to see wonderful dizzy specialists and diagnosed with Migraine-Associated Vertigo.

This is a type of silent migraine. I do occasionally get migraine head pain (lousy, vomiting etc etc) but predominantly have chronic dizziness and sense of instability/head motion. Can get worse with nausea, wild dizzy dreams with loads of swings and adrenaline stomach rushes.

They started me off on Topamax, but at 50mg I fell into deep, deep, deep depression almost over night and was taken off it pretty sharp. Am now on 50mg Lamictal, about to increase to 75mg. Some good days but still a lot of mobile/swinging/lousy days. If it encourages you, I am much improved generally on last August and can manage the gym, running and full-time work.

Migraine is not just the head pain....there is all this other neurological stuff going on....great isn't it!!!! Good Luck. ali
