Migraines' Frequency Influences Heart Attack, Stroke Risk

quote:
Women who have weekly migraines are at an increased risk for stroke compared to those with few or no migraines, a new study finds.
quote:

Okay I am fine "they" are getter fewer and fewer, this find will put me at ease. Reading the next sentence put me back in the worrying pack
again.

quote:
On the other hand, those with less frequent migraines may have an increased risk of heart attack, the same team of researchers report
quote:

Can't win on all fronts !!!

It worth reading the rest of the article tho.
I am not here often. That could be a good sign, my chronic pain is well controled, I still have pain everyday but not as much with my medication. So, I am more active and try to do as much as I can with my craft and painting and getting used to be a gran-mother crazily sewing for my new grand-baby and the one to come. I do exactly what used to make me smile about grand mothers, I am going gaga !!! And I love it.
This place will always be in my mind, I learned so much here and will keep at learning. I do read the newsletters, my favorites. So if you don't see me I'm okay, usually when I am here it's because I am not feeling the best.
HUGS to all Mariepi

Glad to see your name again! And even more glad that your pain is well controlled.

CONGRATS on the grandbabies!! How utterly wonderful is new life!

quote:
According to Lipton, repeat migraine attacks may have a direct influence on the risk of stroke. "This is plausible because, during the aura, there are profound changes in the brain which diminish blood flow to the brain," he explained. "Stroke is usually caused by diminished blood flow to the brain."

If this were true, preventing migraines should decrease the risk of stroke, although this hypothesis has not yet been tested.

It's also possible that frequent migraines simply point to an increased risk for stroke, rather than actually causing it, Lipton said.

Either way, there's no reason to panic.

"Even if the relative risk of stroke triples in those with frequent migraine, the absolute risk for most people remains low," Lipton said. "If someone who would otherwise have a stroke risk of 20 per 100,000 has that risk triple due to frequent migraine -- to 60/100,000 -- they are [still] very unlikely to have a stroke."

And really, I promise I'm not trying to start a fight but this sorta opens the door for discussion on the length of time that the blood-constriction phase of a migraine lasts. If it lasts a fraction of a second, logically that wouldn't cause any damage at all much less an ischemic stroke or a migrainous stroke or an ischemic heart attack.

Just my thoughts. Your ponderance mileage may vary. Blinking

Absolutely, we need more research on this.

Still, it's been my impression that there have been enough imaging studies to know that the vasoconstriction lasts only a fraction of a second. This is all from the AAN conference, which I didn't attend. Let me see if I can get more info from Dr. Lipton and get a clear enough understanding to write an article that will help us all understand it better.

I am new to the forms, but was glad to find them; I have had migraines since I was approximately 7 years old. Over the years over my migraines have gotten much worst, I have been treated by a multitude of different doctors, but non of them have been able to be of much help to me.

On average I will have two – three a week , some span a week or two and then finally break. But the bad ones well span any where from three weeks to two months + were I am now. I’m currently at the 3 month mark. I’ve already been put in the hospital. For several days.

I Had a stroke 3 years ago from My last bought like this, so I can not docks say I can not take ant any of the med the would usually stop this kind of migraine. They tried just knocking me out kind of like trying to reset my system. That did not work

He just changed come med around hope it helps

I know what you mean- thanks for sharing the article even though it is scary.

I have had preeclampsia twice, which puts me at greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease later in liafe. And with the migraines thrown in...

I just tell myself it's better to know than not know, so I can focus on making healthier lifestyle choices now.

Welcome to the forum April!

We have some great articles here, as I'm sure you've seen. Not to mention the support from others who know what you are going through.

Have you seen a Migraine Specialist? Check out our list and see if you can find someone on there, if you are unhappy with your doctor.

I'm sorry you've been having a hard time breaking your Migraines! That's terrible! As I'm sure you know, any Migraine lasting longer then 72 hours is considered Status Migrainous. What have they (the hospital) used to try and break your Migraine?

We also have some great info if you are starting to learn about Migraine: Migraines: Where to Start.

Welcome to the forum! Please let us know if you need help with anything.

Oh, and please visit our Start Here: Forum Guidelines and Policies folder.

Welcome to MyMigraineConnection April.

You've found a great place for information, support and compassion. Everyone has given you great links, so I won't repeat them. Maybe add a few. When you've read them, don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have.

Stroke poses a risk for some women with Migraine disease. I'm sorry to hear you've had one. This article talks about the risks: More Research Links Migraine With Aura and Stroke in Women

Something to think about regarding a Migraine specialist: when a pipe under your kitchen sink breaks you call a plumber, the expert. You could call a carpenter who can fix the pipe, then fix the cabinets, paint the room and so forth. Neurologists treat so many different conditions it is hard for them to be experts in any one area. A Migraine specialist is just that - an expert treating only Migraines and headache disorders. Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special?

Hi, April! Add a droolie welcome hug to your pile. Smiler

The thing is, they've really got to work harder to break this cycle you're in. Sounds like they've given up, in a way, perhaps because your options might be a bit limited med-wise due to the stroke history. Just switching your meds around isn't likely to work, particularly if they're preventative meds, which I assume they are. In order for preventatives to have a fighting chance, you have to break the cycle. Plus, it's not safe to leave you in status for so long. The point to all this is that if they can't help you, you need to find someone who can. Usually that means finding a true migraine specialist. I see Eileen gave you our links.

Whatever you do, don't give up hope. We'll be right here to help you hang in there and answer any questions we can for you, okay?

Big, gigantic smooshes for you...Group Hug
