man day 12 or 13 - would have to look up start date and tonight I am at a 7/10 nearing an 8. I see my specialist, an interventional radiologist tomorrow. i am having some withdrawl issues from my taper of cymbalta and my BP is high. i am worried I can't get the nerve blocks with my numbers wacko. Will find out tomorrow I guess. Either way someone has to do something as while I have had hours here and there (yesterday I think i made around 20 hours sans headache) 12 days is too many. The pain level is too strong. I NEED it to stop. So... 1. I need to get additional imitrex for the month due to crazy insurance arguing about triptan limits. and 2. I need some sort of abortive that will work on THIS headache!
What are options that you all use on unrelenting headaches? What options can I explore with my doc(s)? |

Hi Solta,
There are IV treatments that can be done to break Migraine cycles. Your Migraine pain seems to have gone on WAY too long, you must be exhausted. Click HERE for that information. Imitrex taken more than 2-3 days a week, can created Medication Overuse Headache. If we have MOH, no prevention medication on earth will work. Have you seen the information on this? HERE it is. If it is a repeat, please forgive me! Good luck at your appointment, let us know how it goes, ok? |

I hope your appointment is great, and you're already seeing progress.
If I have a 7 for 3 days, I'm off to Urgent Care or the ER. I haven't been to the ER in several years, but had a great experience the last time. They even valet parked our car! At Urgent Care, the last two times they gave me injections of Toradol and Phenergan, plus a prescription for 6 Demerol tablets. That combination finally stopped the nasty beast. It also put me to sleep for several hours, which probably helped, too. It's not immediate, but sometimes steroids are used to break a long migraine attack. Ask your doctor about it when you ask about IV treatments. Feel better, Gret |

Drs appointment was intriguing... adding orphenadrine to my mix of drugs. Also going to try to use topiramate as an abortive. His goal is to find 3 drugs that can abort and have me cycle through them.
The intriguing part... got there told him how I have been feeling and that GP thinks I might have a sinus infection. Due to my pulse and BP specialist is leaning towards I had mastoiditis - severe sinus infection that moves in to rear bones in the skull. He noted he was half tempted to give me an iv antibiotic... but he didn't just sent me another round a levaquin. then he did a small series of trigger point injections and nerve blocks. This one was much smaller than the one 6 weeks ago. It relieved the head pain I was having this am (up to about a 3 range but increasing). Now I am a tad sore in my left temple but trying to ignore it. I made it out of there without taking a lortab for pain from injections. I didn't hurt much last time mainly I was dizzy. I got a note to take work off next 2 days as after last injection set I was very odd in the evening on day 2. Hard to use it though as I am in car sales and this is a weekend... but, thinking with the last few weeks being so nasty it might be wise. He talked to me about rotating meds. My body has only lasted about a month on any prophactic med before it finds ways around it. He was talking about how that is how headaches differ from back pain - they adapt. Was nice to hear a doc say this as it has been one of the huge problems. Prophylactics if they work will not last. So, to combat the not lasting he is going to rotate me as stated above. I get 20 topamax (if insurance approves it, hate this company they argue about EVERY script I get!) I can use those 3 days on 3 off. I had some GI issues with topamax before, I am hoping the 50 mg dose is what my body can take. I think it was. If not, I will have to change. I am also supposed to do aerobic excercise - walk or use the bike - 30-45 minutes a day. Back to neti washing frequently. stay on the baclofen I think that summarizes it. I did go get a massage last night. It was awesome. Hurt, but in a stretchy good way. Once the injections clear I might go again. Heck massage costs about as much as the injections - if I got them regularly they might help. |

Yes, the way you will be using Topamax is intriguing.

oh I forgot the even odder part... I have tons of scar tissue in my neck. Likely from the myofascial issues that the headaches trigger. Doc thinks it looks like a whiplash injury - thing is - never been in a car wreck!
So I have a very nasty infection and scar tissue |

I would double check how you are to take the Topamax.
Topamax is only a preventive. It cannot abort a migraine. Solta,
Topamax as an abortive? Topamax three days on and three days off? How much per day, Solta? 50 mg per day on that type of regimen. OK. I'm not a doctor, and I can't give medical advice, but did he explain this, Solta? I really don't understand this. Topamax does not have the properties to act as an abortive. Taking it for three days doesn't even give it a chance to do anything. I don't know what to say to you. I will tell you this -- given all the information on this med, all the instructions in the prescribing info, all the studies that show it takes up to three months to work, the prescribing info that it be started at 25 mg per day, etc., I would be getting a second opinion. That, however, is just stating what I would do. What kind of doctor is this?
