Does anyone listen to a particular type of music when they are having a migraine? or is even music unbearable to some people?

i get very fidgety and have anxiety problems when i have an attack so music helps calm me down a bit. i like to listen to very peaceful and tranquil music while i lay in bed with my heating pad wrapped around my head.right now Enya and a sounds of nature cd have been getting more play on my cd player than any of my other music.

just curious as to what other people listen to and what artists (i need some new relaxing music )thanks you.

It's strange, but if I listen to music during a migraine, it's usually hard and heavy, which somehow distracts me from the pounding in my head. This only works with my daily headaches or moderate migraines, though. If that pain notches up too much, I can't tolerate music, and usually end up watching tv with the closed captioning on and earplugs.

In general, when I'm listening to relaxing music, it's usually classical, but nothing along the lines of Vivaldi, because that makes me more anxious.

I went to see my friend's band play a few weeks back (they are a hardcore punk band)and within minutes of being there i felt the headache coming on and i started to panic (this was before i had seen a doctor and i didnt have any medication besides tylonol ) i had gotten a ride there with another friend and had no way to get home right away so i could lay down, so anyway it was so loud in there and i just couldnt take it anymore and begged my friend to drive me home, luckily he hadnt had anything to drink yet and he drove me home. i guess it just goes to show how different people are, what works for one person may make another worse. when i listen to classical music it tends to be the very light and mellow stuff, definitely no Wagner or Beethoven for me during a migraine, that just makes my brain feel like its gonna explode.

I am one that music is unbearable. I really love music and really miss it when I am in a migraine period. I can go for long periods where I can not listen to anything. I prefer silence. It is quite unfortunate. On the lucky side, I am not bothered by light. In the summer, that is a plus as I can sit in the sun and enjoy the warmth of the sun even with a migraine!

Nope, can't do it. I went to music school and everything. When in pain only silence will do.

when i try sitting in silence my anxiety level skyrockets, the mellow music turned down just enough to hear helps the anxiety...but not always

It really depends on what stage I am in, I guess. IF it is a full blown monster, I can't stand ANY noise. But if it is just getting started or one that is nagging and dull, I will relax with some light music. I usually listen to Norah Jones. She is an amazing singer and her music really relaxes me.

Now, on the other hand, when I am pain-free, I like loud, hard, rock!! I love going to concerts. I just can't do it so much anymore. It is usually too loud for me (never thought I would say that when I was younger :-) )
If I am feeling ok, it's ok, but if I am having any type of migraine coming on or just getting over, I usually can not tolerate it. This is one part of my old life that I miss the most. My hubby and I use to go to concerts all the time, and to see local bands. One of our good friends is in a band, and I haven't made it to see him in a year due to the beast!!

Well, that's my 2 cents.

I have a white noise machine and when I go into the bedroom, that's the first thing I turn on. But I like a fan running in whatever room I'm in, otherwise, I can hear my head if that makes sense.

One day I had a raging migraine going in to work...I couldn't deal so I left, and on the way home I had my stereo up. It tends to drown outside noise out and alleviate some of my stress. I don't normally get hypersensitive to sound, but occasionally I will. Human voices, in particular, can hurt my ears. Weird.

Anyway, I got home and into the silence of my bedroom, and realized just how much worse the cacophony of the music made things for me. Even if I didn't feel like the sound hurt me like light hurts, I did realize that the silence made things seem more calm and easygoing. I had less anxiety overall.

I should try listening to calmer music on occasion with a migraine, though. Otherwise I tend to listen to my own thoughts which makes time seem to move slower.

I guess I'm a mix. It doesn't hurt me, but it doesn't help, either.

I think for the most part, the tv is always on. There is always noise in my house. I don't know if I am an oddball - but I can't have it quiet during migraine because of the Tinnitus - my ears ring constantly - all the time (well, almost all the time) so I always have the tv, radio or something on making noise to block the ringing in my head.

I'll have to try Enya though - good suggestion! I like Micheal Buble -my DH and I have very different views on music. We like a lot of the same stuff - but some stuff the other loves the other hates.

I like classical too! I have a cd - I foget who it is and I couldn't even begin to try and spell the name without butchering it - but it's all violin - oh it is so good!

I am looking into a sound machine - I think that might help too. Not like a noise machine, like white noise - but one that plays the ocean and stuff. Or just a cd I guess will do.

I have this pillow that plays music (mp3 mplayer, or a cd player plugs into it), it's really comfortable. And few times, when I had a migraine a tried it and listend to the guy Teri recommended in her book - Steven Halpern: Effortless Relaxation and I would fall asleep like a baby. Very calming.

Otherwise, just the TV in the living room, and I have really bad phonophobia (but refuse to be alone in a dark room). And when I am alone and the migraine gets bad, I can't imagine getting up and putting on some music, I am just like somebody left me, unable to move.

That's acutally what I have - it plays forest sounds, ocean waves, thunderstorms, etc. I have it set on rain, so it really just sounds like radio static.

Me too! Give me heavy metal and I am a happy girl up until it is in full swing. Like you, I usually watch tv until I am bored and restless. I could probably get a law degree with all the court TV on these days Cool

Yeah, I have a noise machine, too. I like the ocean waves. I always sleep with a fan on,too. I have to have that noise to sleep. My machine annoys Dh, so I don't use it that much at night when he is in the bed. I also have a relaxation tape, kind of like hypno-therapy that I use occasionally. But like I said earlier, it really depends on how bad it is hurting. If it is really bad, I don;t like any noise at all. ESPECIALLY people talking to me. One time DH was taking me to the ER and was talking in the truck and I looked at him and said, "I don't like words right now!" Funny, huh?

Laura,
I think we could get our law degree and practice together. I watch all of those shows, too. Plus I read true crime and profiler books. DH says I am trying to figure out how to murder him and get away with it, for the life insurance, I guess? Ha ha!!

Pain free wishes to all,
Sherry

Sherry-That is to funny!! Even my kids are like, People's Court again and walk around doing the theme music. I love mysteries and sci-fi but my all time favorite author is Nelson DeMille. Right now I am re-reading Plum Island but his best book is Gold Coast. For my dr. visits I carry Tuesdays with Morrie but I am starting to think it is a book to be read at home...I think it is going to get sad Crying
