Hello,
On the atopy-allery-migraine connection: I just saw my dermatologist yesterday and she told me some doctors and scientists believe there is a connection between atopy (another name for allergy) and migraine, others don't She said it's something they argue about at meetings all the time. If you think about it, it kind of makes sense. In the simplest terms, atopy is the result of an oversensitive immune system. Your body overreacts to stimuli that shouldn't normally cause a reaction. In migraineurs, our brains are oversensitive. they reacts to triggers that normally wouldn't cause these reactions, and we get migraines. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder, also. I've had migraines since I was a teenager (I swear I had abdominal migraines as a kid - I always had unexplained belly pain). They got better in college and in my 20's, but they came back with a vengeance winthin this past year. My PCP and neurologist are working hard and confident I'll get better, but I'm just barely functional. I also have a rediculous number of allegies, asthma (well-controlled), and moderate eczema, so I fit the atopy picture well too. I didn't know about it until my dermatologist mentioned it yesterday. I asked her if there were any different treatment madalities for those patients with migraine atopy. She said no, it was just something they argued about. She also said science isn't as advanced as scientist would like you to believe. Ain't that the truth? Thanks, Melissa |
