It is nice to have a place to questions of others who suffer from migraines.

My question is if you have had a MRI did it show white matter changes or lesions?

My MRI showed changes and one distinct lesion. My neurologist explained that patients with long histories of migraines often have the changes.

Thanks

Hi AmyBeth,

I've had an MRI but they never said it showed any white matter or lesions. I have, however, heard that this can happen to migraineurs over time. Here, you will find some facts from Teri Robert's book, "Living Well With Migraine Disease & Headaches". Good stuff. I hope it helps.

There is also some more updated information on the article we have here:

Is Migraine a Progressive Brain Disease?

My MRIs have all come back normal, but my understanding is that it's not unusual for migraineurs to have lesions like what you're talking about.

Hi Sandi, MJ and AmyBeth,

You've been given great information by our members, nice work ladies!

I think after you read the information, if you still have questions, or concerns that you feel are not being addressed by your doctor, don't hesitate to get another doctor to look at your MRI. Another set of eyes is never a bad thing.

Well when I was able to do MRI's all it showed is that I did have a very small Cyste(not sure of spelling). The Neuroligist and Neuro-surgen have said that it is too small to be causing the migraines. Now since I cant' do an MRI anymore (i have a pacemaker) i just to cat-scans which don't show anything except that the cyste is not growing.

My latest MRI, from just over a month or so ago, showed no lesions of any kind, migraine or otherwise. And I know they did some extra settings to specifically look, too, since I show symptoms characteristic of MS, and I've had other MRI scans in the past to look for that.

I guess I am surprised. I thought there would be more saying they have lesions, I was told they were very common.

I wonder if the doctors/researchers may have over estimated the number of lesions caused by migraines.

It makes me think of my MRI results in a different way.

AmyBeth,

I had an MRI done in January. I was concern with the results because mine showed that I had lesions, too. My primary care doctor (not the neurologist at that time) explained that it was "typical" or common for some migraineuers to have them. Confused I've oftened wondered what it means for the future.

Here are an article, and an Ask the Clinician response, which will give you more info about migraines and brain lesions:

Is Migraine a Progressive Brain Disease?

12/17/07 #9 - Does part of the brain die every time you have a Migraine?

I hope these help.

Well, I just got copies of my two most recent MRIs (one from this past March, one from February 2007) - both make incidental note of a venous angioma on the right side of my brain, which is a type of benign lesion. From what I discovered in my researching, venous angiomas are abnormalities but not uncommon, though I couldn't find much information about these in relation to migraine/headache. It doesn't seem like there have been any links necessarily, but I have seen mention of them on this site before.

Neither of the docs who sent me for these MRIs mentioned this result, so, I never even knew about it until I requested copies of the MRIs for my own records. These are still considered "normal" MRIs I guess.

I will also say that it seems like this particular type of lesion is not one that develops over time.

Not sure if this helps - but thought I would add this info all the same. Flower

I have had 2 MRI's and both have showed that I have white matter lesions. Fortunately, the 2nd one showed 'no change' in the said lesions from one year to the next. My neuro is still concerned about these lesions because he says that they are more numerous than should be present for Migraine disease and for a woman my age--I am 46 years old. I have about 9+ of them, I believe. Roll Eyes

After the 1st MRI, I was tested for multiple sclerosis (MS)--via a couple of spinal taps and a patient history; patent foramen ovale--PFO (via a TEE--transesophagal echcardiogram--yeah THAT was a fun procedure--NOT); a blood clotting disorder (holy cow they did a LOT of blood tests) and I can't remember what else. My neuro was being very thorough. He says it still might be MS after all those tests. What he doesn't think it is is 'just' Migraine. He says the pattern of the lesions and the number are just not that indicative of Migraine alone. Whoopee, eh? The only thing is, I don't have any symptoms of MS and never have as far as I can recall. No dropping of things, no weird visual things that can't be explained by past pregnancies or Migraine--so things don't add up. Eeker

My neuro's a nice guy and says--in his Indian accent--I just have a 'holy brain.' LOL. I do like the guy. I'm one of the unexplained. I'm supposed to have an MRI if I ever start having weird symptoms, so I notify him. The thing is, what qualifies? I know it's not my 'regular' visual aura. <sigh> Guess I'll know if anything truly odd crops up.... Hair Raising

I can't go through an MRI as I am hypersensitive to sound. All my CT scans come out norm.
