I haven't been around much lately...between school and work and migraines, it's been a rough couple of weeks.
I had a 3-day long migraine last week, and then got another one this monday. I still had it yesterday, so I called the doctor, but her office was closed. I felt bad about paging her, so I put it off. I still had the migraine today though, and i finally got up the courage to call. I talked to the on-call neurologist, who was very nice and helpful, although I don't think he knew much about migraines - he basically asked me what he should give me. The only thing my doctor had told me about status was the steroid pack, so that's what he ended up giving me. It seems kind of scary, but hopefully it will break this migraine. Just wanted to update you all and let you know I kept my promise! I don't know what I'd do without you all |

I'm proud of you for keeping your promise and contacting the doctor, although I wish you had done it sooner. But I know that just doing it was a big step for you.
You've taken a number of good steps with your health care since you first signed on to the forum. Seeing the progress you have made in taking charge of your health care has been an encouragement to the rest of us. Thanks! Maybe next time you will get up the courage to page the doctor if you have to, or else go to the ER? Just remember, status migrainous is a medical emergency, and that's what pagers and ERs are for. Take care and keep up the good work. |

E,
I sure am glad you talked to the doctor to get some meds to break your cycle! But just remember...your promise is for YOU!! You've gotta promise YOURSELF that you'll get help if you're in status! You're VERY important and you deserve to feel better!! Sending happy thoughts your way! |

Good for you, e! I hope the steroid pack does the trick for you.
Don't feel bad about having to have your doctor paged. A good doctor will truly understand that migraine timing isn't dependent on their scheduled office hours, and will be happy to help. Doctors are used to on-call time. That's what it's for. As for what you'd do with out us, I'm sure you'd get by. It just wouldn't be nearly as fun. Dragondrool Forum Moderator ~~8=:>>>> |

Good for you! Doesn't it feel great to treat yourself with respect?
And good for you for educating the doctor. The next time you see your doc, ask him what you should do in a similar situation. He might have an idea other than the steroid pack. Gretchen in Mississippi |

Good for you, e. I used to feel bad about calling during non-office hours, but that's what the on-call doc is for. Medical emergencies don't wait for the convenience of office hours!

Thanks for the kind words, nutcracker. I really don't think i'd have come this far without your support. I know I should have called sooner, but my doctor made me nervous the last time I called - she said that she thought 3 days was too soon to act on status, and that I should wait more like a week. It wasn't nearly as scary as I thought it would be though, calling the on-call doc, so next time I'll call earlier anyway
So far, the migraine hasn't broken yet, after 2 doses of the steroid, but I don't know how long these things are supposed to take. I'll be calling the doc in the morning to let her know what's going on, so I'll discuss it with her if it still hasn't broken. Thanks again for all the help and support everyone! |

e,
If your migraine still has not broken, I would still either call the doctor back - get your regular neuro hopefully or 2. go to the ER. You need to break this migraine. If the steroids are not helping - and by my count this is day 6 now??? You need to go seek some attention. Sorry to say, but that is the way it is. I would call your neuro first, see if she is in, what she recommends, maybe she can see you and has in office treatment plans such as IV or something? If not, it sounds like ER time to me. I am proud of you though for calling the neuro when you reached status. Thats a great step. But now you still have to keep going. If that migraine is still there, you need to break it. Thanks Eileen!
Yeah, this is day 7 now... I can't say it's broken, but it is barely noticeable this morning. I have a call in to my doc, but haven't heard back yet. I'll keep you posted! Erika |

My doctor never called me back today
The migraine is lessened somewhat, but still hasn't broken. I don't know how long these steroids are supposed to take to work... I've taken three doses now of dexamethasone, 16 mg each. I guess the only other abortive option is DHE. |

Ok, I called my doctor back - she was the doc on call this time. She told me to take another imitrex and an extra neurontin tonight, and call her tomorrow if it hasn't broken. I'm a little wary about the imitrex... it hasn't worked the last 4 times i've taken it, and this will be the 5th time in two weeks that I've taken it.
Anyway, I'll keep you all posted. As always, thanks for being there to listen to me ramble! |

Thanks nutcracker! Sorry to see you have a migraine today - I hope you get some quick relief
I took the imitrex immediately, and I'm about to take the neurontin, inderal, and maybe i'll try the restoril again. Thanks again for the support - hopefully i won't be calling the doc in the morning |
