Well My lil man Trystin has his appt. with his pedi. neurologest tomorrow. He had seen this guy 2 years ago, but during that time Trystin had been so ill so frequently that it was too hard to tell if it was migraines or just his illnesses.(we are talking viral menengitis X3, mono, rsv etc as well as weekly colds)

For the last 4 months or so, Trystin has been relativly healthy! Only one major cold. It is very obvious now that it IS migraines, not just another virus coming on.

Because He had seen this neuro before, and his referral was still good, we were able to get him set for appt. in one week! So anyway tomorrows the big day! Wish us luck! Fingers Crossed

Thanks!
TJ and Tawsha

Thanks yall! Thanx We had our appt. today. It went well. It is official, TJ has Migraines w/o Aura. The Neuro took time to show TJ a picture of the brain and what happens during a migraine.

He is prescribing Maxalt for him, but no preventitive at this point. Right now TJ is having about 1 migraine a week thats bad enough to put him out. He has mild pain off and on, but its not enough to really bother his daily routine. If Trystin gets worse, 2 or more migraines a week, then his Dr. said he would put him on magnesium and something else that starts with an R (sorry migraining cant remember)

Jean Ann, TJ is 9 He will be 10 on July 5th.

Was it Riboflavin, Tawsha? It's also called Vitamin B2. Magnesium and Vitamin B2 are part of my preventive regimen.

Yes nutcracker that was it! Thanx. I was concerned what the neuro could have wanted to put my son on for preventative, so I was relieved he wanted to try a gentler more natural path first.

Nuts, sorry about Trystan. I'm glad you found a pediatric neuro, though. I hope the plan you have in place works well.

Tawsha, sorry to hear that TJ is stuck with the beastie, but glad he has a diagnosis and treatment plan. And that he has such a great mom who is very knowledgeable about migraines!

Aww ty yall. I just feel awful that I have passed this horrible disease on to my son. I know that I couldnt avoid it, and thats the chance with having kids, but you just cant help feeling a bit guilty.

I have suspected it for years that he too had migraines, it was just too hard to sort out for the last couple years. At least now we can work toward controling them.

Now on to a question.. Has anyone taken Maxalt? (especially you children out there..) I am unfamiliar with this med, or what to expect when TJ takes it. I also had some concerns on how triptans will affect his asthma, and react with his Advair. I did talk to the parmacist about it, but he said if it did react, it was important regardless to get the migraine under control. I didnt really like that answer. HMM, migraine or Asthma attack? how bout both?? His darn rescue med for asthma makes his headache worse too!

Perhaps this is better suited in a new topic who knows.
But thanks again yall Its good to have friends on here that understand

I haven't personally used Maxalt before, but I know some here have. I'll give you the link to our info on Maxalt - HERE.

Hopefully that's enough to get you two started while others chime in on this for you. Group Hug

Hi Tawsha

I'm glad you have a plan in place. That must be a relief.

I feel guilty all the time that my son has migraines. I hardly ever have one myself.

Andrew has tried almost all of the triptans by now. When he was younger (can't remember how old), but he did try imitrex, maxalt and relpax. He has never had a problem taking them. He has not had any side effects. It never affected his asthma.

His asthma is under control now and he only uses a rescue inhaler occasionally. There was a time when he used asthma preventatives as well, but I don't remember if they were used with a triptan.

Good luck. I hope the maxalt will work for you. That would be great.

Thanks Jean ann! It helps hearing from another mom who has given this med to her kids!

Im real glad to hear Andrews asthma is in such good control! Trystin has pretty bad asthma. My older son Chris has it mildly, and like your son, doesnt need the preventative anymore, just the rescue every once in a while. I would love to see Trystin to that point! But I think he has had too much damage done to his lungs in past illnesses.(partial lung collapse) Not to mention being a 10 week preemie.

Thankfully I havnt had to give TJ his maxalt yet. He had one mild migraine night before last trying to surface, but eating and going to bed early knocked it out before it reared its ugly head too bad! Thumbs Up I was happy as that doesnt always work, and he is already so sick with this cold or flu or whatever is going round!
