So the periactin has been deemed useless, Yoel (2nd Grade) has been averaging 5-6 migraines per week, although most of them seem to be less severe, he typically can return to class after an hour or so with the nurse.

We started seeing a chiropractor who specializes in peds and the neuro prescribed 15mg of topomax to begin this evening, everyone has their own opinion on chiropractic for migraines, but my friend who is a chiropractor (not the one we are seeing) said you would know within 3 weeks if it has any effect whatsoever.

Any harm in waiting to start the new drug? I'm not thrilled about topomax, it could work for a while then need dosing adjustment, side effects etc.

thoughts?

To be honest, I'll give you my PERSONAL opinion. I wouldn't give a child that young Topamax EVER unless it was the last drug on earth. I don't think children are old enough to notice side effects and tell you about them; and Topamax has too many that are just too serious, some permanent.

It may be rare, but Topamax can cause glaucoma, and once the optic nerve is damaged by glaucoma, there's no reversing it. Any vision loss from glaucoma is permanent.

IMO, there are just too many other options to even consider giving Topamax to a child so young. Additionally, the manufacturer doesn't intend it to be used for Migraine prevention in children.

I'm really not trying to scare you, but if I were in your position, I'd insist on another choice of medication. How long did Avi try the periactin? If less than three months, it was a bit soon to give up on it.

I'll be out of town for a week, but will try to check back.
