Hi everyone,

I hate that I passed this disease to my 16 year old son. He gets so sick - missed 30 days of school last year due to migraine alone. So sad to see him suffering. I know what he's going through...sometimes I wonder if I enable him since I know what he's going through?

If he claims to have a migraine, I believe him. Anybody else's kids have migraines? Do you feel you're ever being "played" by a teenager? Guilt is a terrible thing.

Thanks... Confused

My DS is very luck in that, at least at age 22, he's never had head pain that wasn't eliminated by OTC meds.

We've got several members with kids with migraines, some with teenagers. Read through this folder. There are threads about treatment and threads about dealing with schools over absences and needing treatment at school. We've had some great discussions.

I hope that our members with migraineur kids will give you some advice.

I'm so sorry your DS is going through all this. I hope he can find a good preventive regimen soon.

Unfortunately for my Daughter now aged 17, she also suffers migraines around the time of her period, just like he Mum. I hate the fact that I too have passed on this awful disease to her. I am the first that my parents & grandparents know of in our recent family history to suffer from migraines.

All I can do is assist her & support her during her time of need. she no longer lives with me, but is soon at least moving back to the same state as me, so I can attend Dr's appointment with her to try & help find some medications that can assist her.

Hi there, My son also has migraines since he was two years old. He also missed alot of school this year, more than 45 days. Some of his teachers couldn't even give him a grade because he was not in class enough. I am also a migraine sufferer and I know exactly what you mean about enabling him. I'm sure you and I are more sympathetic than a mom who does not get migraines might be. I'm sure my son has used his pain as a way to get out of going to school on more than one occasion. The big problem I have with my son is that he wakes in the morning with a migraine and after he takes his medicine he wants to go back to sleep. If he developed a migraine after school, he would typically take his meds and go to sleep, sometimes not waking up until 8 or 9 o'clock at night. Then he would be up half the night because he was not tired any more causing him to be late the next morning because he needed to sleep in a little later. It's a viscous circle for us. We have decided to homeschool next year so we can work around his headaches. I am very fortunate to work at home and be able to keep him here with me. Getting back to your son "playing" you, I hate to say it but we reach a point where I think we need to teach our children about managing their own pain. I'm sure you have been to work or school or some other activity where you had a migraine and really did not want to be there but had to go anyway. I know I have, and as hard as it is to see your child suffer, if he is going to have migraines for the long term, sometimes we have to be tougher than we want to be. Good luck to you.

Hi

My son is 14 and suffers from migraines. They have become chronic over the past 2 years.

I am very sympathetic to my son and his migraines. My son has them on weekends and he has also had to miss out on fun activities because of them not just school. I'm sure at times, I have wondered, but I always try to be supportive.

It's a tough situation especially with a teenager. We have also been through the sleep problems that Alison mentioned. It's hard to get back to a normal schedule. It turns into a vicious cycle.

Good Luck to you.

You are wonderful folks. Thank you for the input - you're right, he's not just missing school - he's missing baseball (that tells me he hurts for sure!!!)

So, I guess I trust him, we have his meds available at school and an action plan for when he gets a migraine while there. Best I can do and keep my Fingers Crossed that he'll outgrow these like his uncle (my brother) did!

Thanks again!!!!
