My daughter has been suffering with migraines for about a year and a half now. She had been seeing a pediatric neurologist locally for some other issues and they were the ones to initially diagnose the migraines. We have since switched to a Headache Center out of state for her migraine care. She takes Cyproheptadine and Co-Q10 preventatively and Naproxyn when she gets a migraine.

Over the past few months my daughter has has had a few "odd" episodes, the most recent one being Friday. She begins to act strangely. Her speech is no longer quite as clear, and she has difficulty finding words appearing confused. Her left eyelid becomes droopy and she seems slightly less coordinated.

I know it is not uncommon for four year olds to speak unclearly. But this is a little girl who normally enunciates her words carefully. It is also not that uncommon for four year olds to get confused and be unable to express what they are thinking. But this is a little girl who normally carries on detailed conversations. I know there is probably a more politically correct way to say this but when she is in one of these episodes it is as if she were mentally delayed or slow. You would have no idea that she normally knows her ABC's and can write her first and last name, count to 20 ect...

Her pediatrician wants her to be seen by a neurologist(I called them this morning). Now I am left wondering who. Does this sound like it could be related to migraines? Should I try to get her into the headache clinic or stay closer to home and just see the pediatric neurologist? I know you can't give medical advice, I am just having trouble deciding where to seek medical advice from.

Thanks,
Kim

Kim,

Where can you get an appointment more quickly -- with her specialist or the local neuro? Yes, what you describe could be Migraine symptoms, but she needs to see someone who can be sure.

If I were in your place, I'd really want her Migraine specialist to see her, but I might also take her to the local neuro if you could get in to see him sooner.

Please keep us posted??

The local Children's Hospital offered me an appointment for March 25...

We will be making the trip out of state to see the headache specialist later this week. They are scheduling an MRI, MRA and EEG followed up with an appointment with the neurologist. I am not looking forward to the trip, but appreciate that they are taking care of things.

Thank you for your help and suggestions!

Kim,

I'm glad to hear you'll be seeing the HA specialist and that they are planning to do some tests.

I'll keep you and your family in my prayers!
Please let us know how things go!
