Migraine

Hi Everyone

I just wanted to update you on what has been going on. I haven't posted in awhile, but I have been trying to read on a regular basis so I can keep up on everyone.

The good news is that Andrew finished 9th grade this week. He did very well on his report card especially since he was not in school for the entire marking period. He might even make honor roll.

His migraines are a LOT better too. I had emailed Dr. Gladstein last month and told him I was very concerned because Andrew was having sleep issues and did not have an appetite. He prescribed Periactin. Andrew had taken that for 3 years prior to the chronic migraine and chronic daily headache. The periactin is working again. He's down to about one migraine per week, and they are very mild. I hope the worst is over for him. I think Dr. Gladstein is a genius.

I am sending a letter to the school tomorrow with all of my complaints. One of his teachers gave him zeroes for 3 tests giving him a 57 for that class. The teacher never provided the tests for him to take. The same teacher gave him a 68 on the final which he was never given either. It's just ridiculous. School was out on June 13, but Andrew did not finish until yesterday. He was able to take those 3 tests yesterday and turn in the final which was a paper. He couldn't complete the paper sooner because we never got the rough draft back from that teacher until this week. With the tests his grade should be a 96 and I'm not sure what he got on the final paper yet. The teacher did not supply one iota of work or chapters or anything. I got the notes and assignments from another student. He said the work was available online, but the school website went down before Memorial Day and the information was not available after that. I had to keep pestering the Director of Special Services before anything got done.

The French teacher took Andrew's grade on the final exam and put it on every quiz that Andrew never took. This teacher told us at a meeting in May that Andrew did not need to take anymore quizzes. I mentioned in my letter that I didn't think that type of grading was appropriate unless all the students were graded in that manner.

These were the last 2 BIG problems we have had with the school. I have been in contact with my attorney/advocate. She has read my letter and approved it. If the school does not respond then I will be filing a complaint with the US Dept of Education Office of Civil Rights.

This school year has been a nightmare. I'm so relieved that it is over. We registered for cyber school last week. Andrew will be at home next school year. I think he will feel better and do better in school without all the stress. He will decide if he wants to go back to his school the following year.

I am so glad to hear your good news about Andrew's migraines. It sounds like he needs a vacation from school.

I know this is a little off-topic, but my daughter has "attended" cyber school in PA for the last 2 years and we absolutely love it. (I'm the one with migraines, not her, thank goodness.)

Good luck with everything, and I wish your son nothing but pain-free days.

What a relief for you two. I am so glad the school year is finally over. Now maybe you can enjoy the summer before "cyber" school starts.

It still blows my mind that this school is being so uncooperative! I am happy to hear you are already gearing up for cyber school next year.

I'm sure Andrew will be much happier with that situation.

i am so glad the school year is over. i know how stressful it can be. even better is that andrew is feeling good! it sounds like you have a good plan in place for next year, i hope this takes a lot of the stress off you guys- you deserve some peace

Andrew is doing EXCELLENT!!! He hasn't had ANY migraines in a long while. He's taking the elavil and periactin along with the supplements. He is still having some restless leg problem and lack of appetite, but the migraines are finally under control. I hope it stays that way.

Obviously with him doing so well, I feel really good too. I was under such stress with the migraines and school. It was awful. I have started going to the gym and socializing. I was a hermit for awhile when all the problems were going on.

Our school saga is continuing though. To make a long story short, I sent a 6 page letter to the superintendent explaining all the problems we have had. The principal said he would fix some of the grades where the teachers were unfair. He fixed 2, but not the other 2 classes. I now have a local attorney working on it. I hope we get it settled soon because we all need to move on.

Andrew is registered for cyber school at home for the next school year. We've already received his laptop and some of the books. I hope that works well for him.

I haven't had a lot to add to the forum lately, but I try to keep up on the reading. I like to hear about how everyone is doing.

WE have been in the process of moving so it has been hard to post here, but I have been reading and it is good that the school year is at a close. Good luck and my wishes for you and Andrew is for things to keep getting better and better. Lauren is doing well, despite the change in climate. I am now in Louisiana. We have a lot of changes ahead of us, but her migraines are well controlled.
