I saw my specialist today. He upped my dosage of Toprol to 100 mg since we seem to be having some success with that.

Since we found out about the PFO in January, we have been scrambling to work me into the implant study, but up until the last month, the pain wasn't cooperating.

I told him about the persistent aura. He wants me to see an opthamologist (sp?) just to rule out ocular pressure or detached retina, even though he says from my description that he's pretty sure it's persistent aura. He ruled out stroke too, since I haven't lost vision in just one spot.

Problem is, now my migraines are at an acceptable level...But the persistent aura is keeping me from being pushed into the study, since now he is concerned about complicated Migraine. He doesn't sound like he's holding out much hope at this point, but hopefully the upped Toprol will take care of the aura and we can move forward from there.

6 more weeks of waiting...I feel like banging my head on the walls...Maybe this should have been under gripes, but the Toprol is working very well so far at preventing attacks!

Geeze. Hope this gets resolved for you soon.

Just a pointer -- make him explain "complicated Migraine." Is that a description, or is he using that as a diagnosis? The International Headache Society's diagnostic and classification criteria are accepted as the "gold standard," and complicated Migraine is not a diagnosis.

Please keep us posted?

Hey Leeloo, I'm glad the toprol is working.

I'm sorry if I don't know this, but have you tried topamax? A friend of mine with aura only has had success with this.

Teri,

I think he is using "complicated" as a descriptive term. He seemed surprised by the new development. Unfortunately it throws a wrench into everything I was working towards, and this is my last chance to make it into the study. :/

Deb,

Yes, I tried Topamax. It made me extremely lethargic, clumsy, and after a while I was having very abnormal, hallucinogenic dreaming...Which may have been due in part to the mix of methylprednisolone and the SSRI I was on at the time too. I came down off of all 3 drugs at the same time, and it was an experience I never care to repeat. I have never been suicidal, and I repeatedly had to tell myself I only felt the way I did because of the drugs. I feel safer NOT taking Topamax. I was put on Zonegran after that but my specialist said it would take too long to see any effects and we didn't have that kind of time if I was to enter the study, so I was switched to the Toprol.
