Kelly, Thanks for all the info! I was on 160 mg of varapamil. With this latest nonstop migraine, my Dr upped it to 320. I already have low bp, and it took FOREVER for me to be able to handle even the 160mg. we had to increase it half tab every 2-3 weeks for me to be able to handle that.
When she upped it suddenly to 320, my lil 95 lbs just couldnt handle it. My bp droped through the floor. (80s/40s or even lower) Weak, shakey, trembly etc. I too have been having horrible constipation from the Varapamil. I would do the prunes too they are quite yummy! Also the yoghert like MJ said! If those didnt work I would take something gentle, doucalax i think its called.(stool softener) I am now back down to 200 mg daily. I am handling that pretty well, and my bp is back to decent range!(IE:finaly above 90/50) Well the week before Christmas my doc put me on Depakote as well, and Depakote has the opposite effect on me than the Varapamil. Needless to say, my poor tummy has been in a REAL battle! At least I'm moving regularly again! LOL But its causing nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and severe cramping as well as muscle twitches. We have lowered it from 1000mg to 500 mg, but now the migraine is getting worse again. UGGG |

Hey Kelly and MJ,
Thanks for the tips- I'm currently on verapamil, and over the christmas holidays, things stopped "moving on along" (uggh) So, I'm looking to possibly up the dosage at the next meeting w/ the HA specialist, and I don't want to face what I've (ahem) strained to deal with today at the higher dose! Cheers! |

Oh man! You've just been having such a rough time of it! You're poor body. It really is an up and down with the meds...so frustrating with the side effects. Glad your bp is back up and you're moving regularly. MJ, I love your yogurt idea! Thanks! I love natural/organic yogurt! I'll have to start eating that more again! As far as the magnesium goes, my dr didn't want me to go above 400mg a day. But, that may have been just an initial dose to see how I reacted to it. I'm sorry you had such nasty side effects with the verapamil. That sounds awful! Are you on another preventative med now, or are you waiting until you see the specialist? Thanks for the encouragement! I love yogurt too - I'm very sad to give it up! Yogurt and granola was my usual afternoon snack at work. And even though certain brands of yogurt make a big deal about their "live active cultures", all yogurt has them - that's what makes it yogurt! I am still on a preventive. My neuro bumped my dosage of nortriptyline up to 50 mg at night (from 40 mg) when I stopped the verapamil. I had tried this dose before, and had difficulty with the constipation, but I said I was willing to try it again since the Mg seems to help a lot. I've been on this dose about 2 weeks now. Too early to tell if it's going to help. I'm not feeling too positive about the nortrip, but it was the easiest thing for me to try since I've already been taking it and its side effects haven't been too bad. I figure I can hold out another week until I see my new specialist. If nothing else, I've been able to give my body a bit of a break, after a series of bad reactions (cyproheptadine before the verapamil, and making the mistake of taking my Frova on an empty stomach!). -MJ my blog: http://rhymeswithmigraine.blogspot.com/ “HOPE CAN GROW FROM THE SOIL OF ILLNESS!” This is the theme of 2008’s National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness Week in September. Depakote gave me such bad constipation I had to stop it. I also take Elavil for my fibromyalgia sleep disorder and it is very constipating also. I was okay with just the Elavil, no problems, very regular. But when my mig specialist added the Depakote, I actually experienced something called "fecal impaction." It's really gross but if you want to know, google it. Just a word to the wise. Everyone's reaction is different of course. But boy, was that not fun.
LauraSue. (I'm 55, have had severe migraines for over 4 years due to menopause, plus I have fibromyalgia. I take Imitrex plus Anaprox as an abortive and am working with my migraine specialist to find a preventive. I keep a detailed migraine diary and have made significant lifestyle changes to reduce my risk of migraines.) |

Sounds like you've been through a lot of different meds lately that have been rough on you. (As if the migraines weren't bad enough!) It takes someone who is strong and a fighter to get through that! I'm sure it hasn't been easy. Way to go for not giving up! I'm hopeful for you that this new specialist has a new bag full of tricks and ideas.
