Yay, my doctor scored a 9/10 Yes. I wanted to mark "Usually" on a few of the questions because it's mostly yes but sometimes no. Like the after-hours contingency plan. He doesn't prescribe rescue meds, so my contingency plan is to go to the ER. I'm not sure if that's much of a contingency plan...

I do really like my doctor. He's unconventional (maybe 'eccentric' is the word), a little more aggressive in his treatment, blunt in his opinions, and knows his stuff (and explains it well). He has good knowledge of my secondary health issues and what meds we need to stay away from. It's easy to talk to him about my mental health issues too, which is often hard to find since a lot of doctors shy away from it. What I really like about him is that he's compassionate. I was only meant to see him once as a consult and go back to my non-migraine specializing neuro, but when he saw how complex my case was, he offered to take me on even though he has a large patient load already (and doesn't really accept new patients). When I saw him last, and he found out I was using Migranal/Imitrex 3 times a week, he didn't lecture me about over-using but immediately said that he needs to get me to a point where I don't have to use so much. He did tell me to stop using the Migranal and limit Imitrex to two times per week but didn't lecture, and he took most of the responsibility on himself (too much so I think). He's also still doing everything he can to keep me off of Depakote (even after I said I'm desperate enough to try it now) because he knows I'm concerned about the side effects. It's nice to have a doctor who cares enough about my concerns that he wants to keep trying even after I've started to throw in the towel.

He's respected by other doctors in the area too. I was referred to him by 2 other doctors who thought he could help me and he also got a great recommendation from another migraine specialist I saw for a second opinion.

I hope this topic stays "alive" for two more weeks. I am going for my second appointment so I will have a better feel for him then.
