Technically, this is new content on our depression site, but I think it will interest y'all too. (I'm now writing some for MyDepressionConnection too.)

Migraine disease and major depressive disorder (aka clinical depression) are frequently comorbid conditions. Comorbid means that a person has both conditions at the same time, but neither is considered the cause of the other. Research has shown that 47% of Migraineurs are affected by depression.

An article in this week's edition of The Lancet based on World Health Organization (WHO) surveys concludes that depression produces the greatest decline in health compared with the chronic diseases angina, arthritis, asthma, and diabetes. Still, the percentage of people with depression who receive treatment remains deplorably low.

The co-morbidity between migraines and depression rings true for me. I have chronic daily headache, migraine, and Major Depression. They feed off each other. My doctors tell me that in my case, both migraine and depression are genetic. I plan to treat my depression for the rest of my life. I'm sure I'll have to treat the migraines, too. Menopause caused a little improvement, but it certainly didn't eliminate them.

My depression is worse when the pain is worse. And the pain is easier to handle when my mood meds are balanced.

Thanks for telling us about the connection, Teri!
