One of the biggest complaints Migraineurs have is access to Migraine abortive medications, especially the triptans - Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, etc.

The problem isn't getting a doctor to prescribe triptans. Doctors prefer to prescribe abortive medications that can actually stop a Migraine in its tracks rather than pain medications that can do nothing but mask the pain for a few hours.

So, what IS the problem? It all comes down to the price of triptans. Triptan prices range from $18 to $70 per dose, an average of $25 per dose, and Migraineurs frequently use two doses to treat a single Migraine attack. This presents us with two main problems...

Here in central Mississippi, both our senator and our Representative are retiring. It'll be hard to replace Trent Lott's seniority, but he's actually the junior senator from Mississippi. That race is wide open. A couple of people, including a wonderful candidate, have announced for the House seat. We only have four, so every one will count.

Looking forward to the site! Thanks for being so active!

One thing I've noticed in all the politics over prescription drug issues in the last several years is that the bulk of emphasis is in making medications affordable for seniors. To a lesser extent, Congress has supported programs for children's health care, too, which can include prescription coverage. Every bit helps, and it's good to pay attention to helping make sure seniors and kids can obtain medications they need.

But...they always seem to leave out the great big group of those of us between the ages of 18 and 65, as if we're automatically able to afford the outrageous prices of meds just because of the age bracket we fall into. Personally, I think they need to work on reforms and programs which extend the help with prescriptions to all citizens. We all deserve a break.

Beautifully said, and you're right about forfeiting the right to complain if you don't vote. I hate that.

I did the grassroots campaign for the last election and would love to be involved with this. Anything (k, except a lot of $$, pretty tight around here with me not working), but phone calls, emails, flyers, whatever...consider me IN.

Thanks Teri! Thanx Heart Thumbs Up

Hi, MW!

I'm really excited that HealthCentral is putting the site together. I love this company!

The triptans were just one example of how meds prices are hurting us all. Looking at what my insurance company and I have paid for my meds this year is really frightening, and I only use triptans -- well I'm not sure how often, but less than a dozen times a year -- so triptans were a tiny part of it.

The whole health system is messed up, but then look who I'm saying this to. You know that already.

Thanks, MW. Actually, in September, we weren't testifying. We were going to the individual Congressional offices asking each of them for their support. You know, I was nervous going into the first office, but once I started talking about the problems and the need for research funding, the nervousness just melted away.

Thanx
