For all of you who are using Topamax for Migraine and headache prevention, there's good news. Generic topiramate has been approved by the FDA and is starting to show up in pharmacies.

This will mean lower prices and, hopefully, lower insurance copayments. The average price of 60 Topamax tablets, 100mg is $434. The average price for 60 generic topiramate tablets, 100mg is $50.

At this point, generic topiramate is FDA approved only to prevent seizures, but doctors will undoubtedly be prescribing generic topiramate off-label for the same uses as they've been prescribing Topamax.

I recently put in a refill for Topamax and my pharmacy let me know that there was a generic version available. I was very happy since it would cost me a lot less.

I was so happy when I picked up my two prescriptions for Topamax this month as I take so much of it (100 mg twice a day and 50 mg twice a day). It tends to cost a fortune! When the pharmacist told me this month a generic was approved I was sooo happy! I was on Topamax's website searching for coupons right before I went hoping to save some money! Typically they dont offer coupons for the high doses that I use!

Thank goodness!!!!!!!! Yipppee!!!

What I need to know is what pharmacies around here will actually prescribe the generic version. Short of calling all of them, is there a way to find out? Anyone know? [Or do I just need to call?]

Good call, Droolie. If enough people ask about it, I'd bet that the pharmacy would get the generic in ASAP!

Deb,

At this point, all pharmacies should have it, but then again, we know how that can go. I'd call.

Here in West Virginia, once the generic is available, the law says that pharmacies MUST fill with the generic unless the doctor or patient specify brand necessary.

I have asked 4 pharmacies if they carry generic topiramate and both said yes. HOWEVER, they have quoted me a HUGE price for the generic. They both have said the generic is 'about the same' price as the name brand topamax. It's nowhere near $50 for 60--100mg tablets. One quoted me $300 and the other $335. I use 90 a month so my price was going to be $450, $517, $549. Right. I don't think so. So, does any place have it anywhere near the alleged price of $50 per 60 tablets? It's hard to find around here. Frowner

**Wait! Update--"C" has it (am I allowed to say store names?) and according to them, I will be charged $27.49 for 90 pills. I am not kidding. I am going to go and try to get it filled right now. I'll come back and let y'all know how it went.

Yes, I have noticed the high prices for generic topamax too. It seems like the benefit is if you have insurance coverage, then the co-pay is lower. I noticed this because my insurance almost didn't pay for my refill last month because I had increased my dose and my Dr. had not called in the dosage increase so I ran out early. It turned out that my insurance did pay after all since I was able to wait a few extra days for it to pay before I picked it up. But I asked the pharmacist about the price and he said that prices may go down later after more drug companies start making the generic drug. If you don't have insurance, there may be some other less expensive medications you could talk to your Dr. about.

Keep in mind that stores can charge whatever they want for meds. Drugstore.com is usually a good indicator of what the average price should be.

As long as you're discussing a legit pharmacy, sure, you can mention the name.

OK. I went to Costco Pharmacy. It was a breeze and they truly did charge only $27.49 for the generic topiramate for 90 pills of 100mg. I can hardly believe it! Eeker My insurance paid also and I had a co-pay of $15. [It's normally $60 for the name brand.] Wow. I am soooo impressed. I am definitely going there from now on. This is excellent. I told them they would NOT believe what I had been quoted from other pharmacies and they said, "Yes, we usually have very good prices for our generics." I'll say. Thumbs Up This is just wonderful. I am one happy camper today. Yes
