We often discuss the need for better treament options for Migraine disease and headaches. Not a single medication has ever been developed specifically for Migraine and headache prevention. Not one, yet we have seven triptans.

For quite some time, I didn't understand how or why that would be. Some people theorized that the pharmaceutical companies could "cure" Migraine disease, if they wanted to, but were making enough profit on medications such as triptans that they didn't want to produce the "cure." Although I can understand that line of thinking, that's not the case.

In a nutshell, I found that we owe our lack of effective treatments to lack of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding for Migraine disease and headache. Most disease research is funded by the NIH. Once that research is available, the pharmaceutical companies have a basis from which to develop treatments. That's why some people say that one medication and six "me-toos" - the triptans - have been developed for Migraine instead of multiple more unique medications.

Is this an open conference to anyone?

Since I'm off this week because of the surgery, I'd be able to make it (yes on short notice too)...Wouldn't be able to do much but hang out and watch...I don't even know if that's possible!

Didn't know if it would be possible...So I am just asking tentatively.

Hi, Leeloo,

Sorry, but it's not really a conference, and no, it's not open. This is a group of doctors who have been planning a day spent talking with members of the House and Senate about NIH funding. They invited me to attend and participate, even though I'm not a doctor, so I'll be up to speed and able to manage the next phase of this advocacy effort. That's to bring all of you into it.

On Tuesday, we're going to sit down and go over the statistics and other info we need to emphasize, and someone familiar with dealing with Congress on this type of thing is going to give us some pointers.

Wednesday, we'll spend the day in our appointments with our reps.

Thursday and Friday, I'm going to go to the HealthCentral offices in Arlington.

I appreciate that you would have come. Glad you're feeling up to it too!
