I have a two questions for you...

  • What medications do we have that were developed specifically for Migrane and headache prevention?
  • Which medications were developed specifically for Migrane and headache prevention?

OK. You got me. They're trick questions.

We have NO medications that were specifically developed for Migraqine and headache prevention.

Teri,
I really appreciate the opportunities you share for me to be active in the fight against migraine disease.

I can fight the pain during a migraine, work with my doctor as an effective team member to help prevent migraines, and educate myself about all there is to learn about migraine disease. Giving a voice to the importance of research for better migraine and headache treatment is not only important for current sufferers, one day it could be important for my children.

Thank you for reminding us to take a minute to make a difference.

Liz,

You're very welcome. Flower

I know what you mean about this being beneficial for your children. I think about my grandchildren very often when working on this issue. We know three of them are Migraineurs. That's part of why I push this so hard.

I got an email back from my Congressman this morning:

quote:
Dear MJ:

Thank you for writing to me regarding funding for medical research. As a physician, I am acutely aware of the importance of adequate funding to help prevent and cure diseases that affect millions of Americans. As you may know, Congress does not appropriate by disease. Funding is provided by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is done on a competitive, peer-reviewed basis. The most important step we can take to ensure funding of research for life threatening illnesses is to maintain our investment in the NIH.

I am a strong supporter of increased funding for the NIH, especially after the disappointing budget appropriations of the past three years. As one of the members of Congress who signed a letter calling for a 6.7% increase in the FY 2008 NIH budget, I was greatly disappointed with the less than 3% increase in last year's budget, and was outraged at President Bush's proposal of level-funding in the FY 2009 budget.

I was also very concerned about the proposed cuts to disease prevention and surveillance programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which is why I was pleased to see that $6.6 billion was appropriated for the public health programs administered by CDC in HR 1105, the omnibus appropriations bill for fiscal year 2009; this is $239 million above last year's funding levels. It is essential that we fully fund important prevention programs under CDC's management. We have learned a great deal from our past investment in science; we know how to prevent many deadly diseases and improve survival rates through early screening. But we cannot implement successful prevention or early screening if we drastically reduce our commitment to CDC.

Please be assured that I will be working with the Obama administration to ensure that FY10 includes a larger investment in both the CDC and NIH. I know how important this investment is for patients and families struggling with life-threatening illness and diseases.

I checked with DBF and he got the same one, but I'm glad that someone there is reading our emails!

Anyone else get a response?

Teri,

Thank you so much for the education you bring to us! As a sufferer, patient advocacy has become very important to me. I often hear people say things to the effect of "Migraine isn't as bad as a real disease; we need to fund more research for serious conditions" and it is appalling to hear. Any time I see an opportunity to let our voices be heard I'm more than happy to take it.

Teri,

I was wondering how much you've heard about non-pescription alternatives? I found a link to a supplement on the MAGNUM website and it's called ForeverWell. I've had migraines for years and tried just about everything on the market. I just started taking it and it seems to be working. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I suffer from both menstrual migraines and also experience them during weather changes. I hate the side effects I've experienced and wanted to find something without the side effects but that takes away the pain. I'm wish we could find a cure rather than throwing more pills at it.
