Teri's got this nifty little animated graphic of a penguin that slaps another penguin up the side o' the head, knocking some sense into him and sending him into the icy water. Smiler

Thanks for replying. I guess I will have to give them the benefit of the doubt, but in my opinion, they need the penguin!!

Dehydration, especially from vomitting, is dangerous! And then to send you home without even fixing the problem that was causing the dehydration?!?! Please stay on top of it.

I hope that by now you are feeling much better.

So this is a little strange, but my nausea was pretty bad this weekend, and I tried eating some rice Chex, followed by 2-3 clementines, and I felt a lot better. Followed that up with my orange ginger mint herbal tea, and I almost felt normal. It worked both Saturday and Sunday nights, so I don't think it was a fluke.

Okay, so do bananas make your tummy not upset?

Yeah, bananas help to calm my tummy down when it is upset. (I only get really nauseated...don't throw up or anything.)
And MJ, rice chex are one of the few things I'll eat during a migraine! I'm not sure about the clementines though...the acidity might get to me.

Since my migraines are pretty much back to normal, I bought something I wanted to try:
Anti Nausea Wristband that presses on the Nei-Kuan Point on your wrist.
It does help, amazing. I use it while I wait for a medication to kick in, but for milder nausea I wouldn't even take a pill. For the past 4 morning I had it on all the time.

I threw up VIOLENTLY One time when I got a cluster and went to the ER dehydrated they then gave me a rx for compazine, I think that is the name.
The DHE shots The dr told me to take my rx nausia pill a half hour to 45 minutes BEFORE I take the shot.

In addition to the pressure on the wrist... a nurse told me once that ice on the wrist helps with nausea, and I've really found that to help. Ice on the wrists, neck, and forehead really helps me.

Also, ginger capsules are great (if you can stand the taste, chewing on the root is even better, but I never cared *that* much for ginger), if you can keep them down. Vernor's ginger ale is great too.

Peppermint tea is fantastic - we used to have a store called Harry's farmer's market in Atlanta, and they sold big tubs of dried peppermint and spearmint. If you can find that at a farmer's market or health food store, it's probably a lot cheaper than the pre-boxed tea... you can just grab a handful and put it in a tea ball. When we grew fresh mint, i liked to just pick some and chew on it.

Another trick from the preggo days was lemonade and lemon drops. Don't know why. I just remembered them but I remember them working.

I also keep the rolaids/tums/pepcid AC (the chewable one with antacid in it so it lasts longer) around to keep the stomach acid at bay, esp if the queasiness is really bad and feels like I'm ready to puke. I've had the pukes so bad it became evil all stomach acid. I will never go there again! I even give the kids a tums so their pukes aren't so bad if they feel queasy.

I've also used dramamine - both the 25mg (which is meclizine and less drowy) and the 50mg (the original stuff and more drowsy).

I had forgotten about peppermint. BUT just and FYI about peppermint is that if you have GERD/reflux, peppermint can irritate that and make it worse.

This is a great question! I've had lots of queasy's for a couple months with my headaches - have always used ginger capsules, but they aren't helping like they used to. Phenergan is doing the trick for the more icky stuff and seems to cut my headaches too if they aren't so bad. Honestly, the nausea is worse than the headache most of the time!

Diane, who was scared to get preggo b/c my SIL was hospitalized with severe morning sickness (luckily????, I just got headaches!)

Lots of great ideas here!

I am shocked that the ER didn't give the OP fluids-- that is just wrong, being that dehydrated is dangerous! At least when I've gone to the promptcare place, they do always give me a LOT of fluids. It always helps my nausea, because if I'm past a certain point dehydration-wise, the dehydration will also make me very nauseated. That, and it also gives them a nice easy line for meds. If your veins were so small from being dehydrated, that was a clear sign that you needed fluids NOW.

I hope your horrible migraine episode passed and that it's been better for you lately!

My usual nausea remedies are:

reglan (oral) or phenergan (oral)
compazine (suppositories)

home remedies:

peppermint-- but it has to be REAL peppermint, so peppermint altoids (made w/ real peppermint oil) or peppermint tea made from the mint in my garden

Ginger-- again, it has to be real! Ginger altoids are great and portable, but nothing beats real, FRESH ginger root! I will try tea if I don't have any of the ginger root to slice and chew, but the root is by far the best.

dramamine/benedryl, etc. sometimes help too

Coke with a squeeze of lime. Has to be the real coke (sugar and all!), diet does NOT work for this!

If I've been vomiting, gatorade is great. Also helps the electrolytes.

Meclazine (Bonine) and Dramamine are 2 different drugs. Dramamine is Diphenhydramine, the same drug as Benadryl. Both are antihistamines, as are Phenergan and Compazine.

Dramamine is the expensive way to buy diphenhydramine. The generic "Allergy Medicine" is the least expensive way to go here.

There is a generic Meclazine available, too.

Real Coke helps settle my tummy, too. You can buy "Coke Syrup," or "Cola Syrup," so you take less volume. What you're looking for is something with phosphoric acid and sugar. This is also called "phosphorylated glucose."

Ginger ale is great, too - any ginger helps. Also helps with my pain levels during a migraine.

Skim milk can help me, too. ANY fat will make it worse.

Bananas work.

I was prescribed Motililum by the neuro but since starting on prophylatic treatment (inderal) I haven't vomited with them so haven't taken any.
Fortunately for me if I do vomit it's only the once and it helps to make it more bearable. If I vomit more than once without eating then it indicates I've probably got a virus (as that happened once when I vomited several times over 2 days) But to reduce the nuseau it's lying down.
Ginger also helps in warm water. I was recommended that when I had a virus that made me vomit even with nothing in the stomach and the GP also said it would help the associated viral headache. It did actually help with the nuseau and headache.

My mom always eats peppermint. I go to sleep. I didn't know coke helped with the nausea. I guess I'm in luck because I'm a huge coke fan. I was experiencing the nausea this morning and had to go back to sleep after sleeping nearly 12 hours. I've been fighting the flu and that on top of a migraine is probably the worst thing ever. I had coke in the other room. I wish I had known.

Hi Jenny Blinking

I take compazine and it works better for me than Zofran and Reglan. I also found Pepcid AC to work pretty well, sometimes the meds alone can make you feel sick to your stomach Frowner

Hope you are feeling better soon!!

I have had good success with benadryl for nausea too.
