I desperately need new contacts. I cant see with these blasted things anymore, however they are my most recent prescription. I was fine in them before my last IIH in June. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my eyes checked again and have my insurance pay for it. My current vision plan only pays for an eye exam once a year.

Morning Nicole,

The only way I am aware is if your eye doctor is an MD and can bill your medical insurance. Obviously there is an issue that needs to be addressed and it maybe considered medical vs just a vision check for new contacts.

I have the same problem with my vision plan. It really doesn't address any type of problem or f/u.

Nicole,

If the doctor treating you for IIH contacts the insurance company, maybe they'll make an exception or cover it on your medical plan.

It's not easy though. I have advanced glaucoma, and my medical insurance pays for all of my eye care, but NOT for the refractive exam to prescribe glasses or contacts. I have to pay for that myself.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes?

Sorry, no great tips about insurance, but if you happen to have a Costco or a Sam's Club or even a WalMart near you, some have Vision Care centers inside them with a ophthalmologist or optometrist who will do a contact lens exam for MUCH less money than your normal physician would charge.

Insurance can be so quirky with regard to vision. Mine doesn't have a vision plan at all. They won't cover corrective lenses, and they won't cover vision exams. That said, they do have an exclusion that states insurance will pay some things if the eye issues are caused by a disease process. For instance, while corrective lenses aren't generally covered at all, they still could end up paying if someone had to have special prism lenses for Graves' eye disease, because it's part of the treatment for the disease. But they love to exclude and work around it if they can, though.

After the horrendous foul up with my attempt at an eye exam. The insurance told me I pay for another one out of pocket and file a mile of paperwork and they would CONSIDER whether or not they would offer to pay me anything back.

I did contact my insurance company and they will not pay for another eye exam. They basically told me I could endure it for another three months and schedule an exam the first of Jan. The price at Wal-Mart really is not bad. I could get an exam and my contacts for less than 200, so I am truly considering it.

My new glasses make me feel motion sick and my eyes won't track across the screen at all. Has anybody had this experience?"

DO you have astigmatism?

I was told that the reason I was getting nauseous from my old glasses is that the prescription didn't correct my astigmatism correctly in my right eye well enough when my prescription changed last time, and when I tried to use the muscles in the two eyes together, I'd feel like if I didn't close one or the other, it was all over, and I would have to run to the nearest garbage can (if you get my drift!)

I literally walked through a mall with my arms out to the sides like I was walking on a tightrope right before I had the Rx changed on the glasses!

just a thought....
