Hi Everyone,
Can hemiplegic migraine cause a seizure-like movements during an HM attack? For about 7-15 minutes at the start of an attack, my head and left arm rock back and forth. Does anyone else have this? Doctors are trying to determine if I also have epilepsy. But I'm curious if anyone of you have this type of involuntary movement. Thanks, Tonya |

Hi Tonya--
In my opinion I say yes. I have involuntary movements on my left side. Both my left arm from shoulder all the way down to fingers, and leg will have jerky movements that I can't control. It can vary from twitches, to much bigger movements depends on how "big" the episode is. Is this the type of movement you were thinking of? |

Hi Trene,
Yes, that's the kind of movement. Did you get tested for seizures, i.e. EEGs? I get confused talking to the doctors about the seizure vs HM attack, probably because they are trying to sort out if I have just HM or HM and epilepsy. So I wanted some reassurance that others with HM also have involuntary movements that may look like a seizure during their HM attacks. Thanks, Tonya |

Here's a link to our article on Hemiplegic Migraine.
According to the article, Hemiplegic Migraine can mimic and be misdiagnosed as stroke or epilepsy. I would assume that mimicking epilepsy would include seizure or seizure-like symptoms. Definitely this is something to ask your doctor about. Dragondrool Forum Moderator ~~8=:>>>> |

Hi All,
I definitely have these types of movements, particularly in my left arm and head. My PT says it looks to her like essential tremors when it happens. They are definitely not something I have any control over, and, yes, sometimes my left leg will join in if the HM attack is really bad. So, to me, it sounds like it is part of HM. --Jaclyn |
