Hi everyone!
Does anyone out there have any great ideas for handling the nausea that comes with migraine? I had a terrible week last week--7 or 8 days of migraine (I know, I should've gone to the ER sooner...). I followed my doc's suggestion and tried DHE shots 2x/day for 3 days. No change. The vomiting was terrible!! Finally, I went to the ER two days ago. They offered only phenergan and dilaudid (even though I asked if there was ANYTHING non-narcotic that might help). They also gave me zofran. They couldn't get a big enough needle in for IV fluids--they had to use an infant needle and they told me it wouldn't handle the fluids, only the meds. The nausea was a little better for a while, but it came back late that night. So it's two days later and I've still got aura and nausea. Woke in the middle of the night to throw up last night. I've taken my phenergan pills/suppositories to no avail. I still feel crummy. What do you guys do when your tummy gets out of sorts? Thanks guys! |

I'm a Compazine girl. Sometimes it aborts the migraines as well as helping with the nausea, so it's a two-for-one. Go Compazine!
I have a few "home remedies" that I use to augment my Compazine. One is to drink some Coke. I know, seems totally counter-intuitive, but it helps. You can use white soda if you prefer. The other is to eat green apples. I was told that there's something about the apple peel of a green apple that helps with nausea. It seems to work. Other than that, I do self-hypnosis, but you need a trained therapist to teach you that one. I know, sounds a little kooky at first, but it does work for a lot of people. Sorry to hear about the bad week |

I rarely throw up, but I often get queazy. Real Coke, in a bottle, not a can, is my migraine comfort food, and it also helps with the nausea.

I'm with ya on the real coke classic thing.....I only drink the stuff when I feel crummy - otherwise I really don't drink soda at all. But that magic coke syrup does help me. Ain't nothing like the real thing baby!

Nothing special, but it works if I'm nauseous, or if I'm throwing up. But- when it's coming out "the other end," I'm helpless. Nothing seems to work... besides more and more and more immodium. Uggh. That's when I have to worry about dehydration. It usually happens from that- not from puking my guts up! Hope you're feeling better, and these suggestions are all great... I'm gonna file this in my mental "toolbox" for when I need it later on one day! |

Lol, I now carry Immodium around with me in my purse at all times. That's a new migraine symptom for me as of a few months ago. Oye, I've forgotten what's it's like to live a 'normal' life and not worry about these things.

I have a nice box of immodium in my backpack at all times. Never know, right? Better to be prepared... than "Honey, can you go out at 4am and get me some immodium" or lying on the floor in some bathroom where I'm all alone. That might just be the worst... |

I can't take anything in - even sips of water for pills brings it up.
I can hold off the visit to the washroom for a while by concentrating on my breathing. If I lose attention and focus on where the nausea is settled it rises quickly and I have to get it out. What really sucks that a lot of sites say people feel better when they throwup and their migraine goes away after they do! I wish that were the case for everyone here. I hope more ideas come up. I'd be willing to try some of them. |

I almost never get nausea with migraine. Sometimes I get it
Munching on ginger root helps some people (but I'm not a ginger fan), and you can get ginger tea, too. I don't know how well the tea works, though. There's also the peppermint that someone else mentioned. If you don't like the tea, sometimes sucking on peppermint candy can help. A friend of mine uses the swirled mints. I tend to use Certs. I've also tried capsules of dried peppermint from the health food store, but that was hit and miss. The Certs were better, probably because they were more immediate. I've also found that holding one of my frozen waterbottles to the back of my neck sometimes helps. My mainstay, though, is Pepsi. Dragondrool Forum Moderator ~~8=:>>>> |

I had a friend that recently had a six hour surgery and when she came out she was extremely nauseated. The nurse ripped open an alcohol wipe and had her sniff it. She said the nausea went right away. I haven't had the opportunity to try it personally yet, and find it kind of hard to believe. I would think that if I were nauseous and I sniffed that it would all be over in another way, but who knows??
Am I the only one that missed something here. Like why were your veins too small to give you fluids? Don't babies get fluids? And if it is due to dehydration, they sent you home without fixing it?? Aside from answering your question, I am really confused here. |

Hi hope!
Yep--dehydration was the problem with my veins. I'm not sure why they wouldn't at least try to get some fluids into me--you're right, babies certainly do get them!! I think they felt a choice had to be made: if they tried the fluids, the IV line might blow and they wouldn't be able to get any medicines into me (at least that's how they explained it to me). And yes, they sent me home without taking care of the dehydration. IMO, that's why I got SOOOO nauseated after the medicines and why I stayed nauseated for so long after... And thanks for the alcohol wipe tip--I'll definitely try that one! |
