I'm not sure where I read this, whether it was on this site or somewhere else...

apparently SSRI's can give you nasty headaches... just wondering if this is true...

Been getting weird headaches since I started on an SSRI anti-depressant for my topsy turvy moods... it starts out as a strange hot tingling feeling in the base of my head, round my occipital region, then it travels behind my ears and round to my temples... it's sort like a migraine....but not with the other symptoms that are associated with migraine... it's weird... it's not my normal headache...

Has anybody else had simlilar symptoms with SSRI drugs??

Hi Kiwi,

I don't recall seeing anything about SSRI's and weird headaches on here, but I could be mistaken. I don't have any experience with SSRI's myself but hopefully someone who does will pop in soon.

Which SSRI are you taking? Have you called your doctor or your pharmacist and asked them about potential side effects?

You may have some luck searching for information over at our sister site:

Health Central - Depression

Good luck and please let us know how you're doing, okay?

I tried SSRIs way back when to try and calm some thyroid-related mood fluctuations while we were waiting for me to crash out of hyperthyroidland. And I had headaches during this time. But...and this is a big but...I have no way to tell whether any of the headaches were from the meds or if it was all just the daily migraine/tension headache combos I was having at the time. Too much head pain to sort out. I suspect I might've had headaches related to the SSRIs, but I've really go no way to know for certain.

Thanks folks!
I don't think that it was the SSRI's causing the headache...(for the record I'm taking fluoxetine) but I do think that perhaps my mood problems could contribute to them perhaps?

I think it could have also been an extended prodrome/aura... I ended up having a massive migraine lasting for round four to five days that landed me in hospital for a few nights...

Got a GP appointment tomorrow... so I guesss I could ask then... if I remember... my brain is quite literally scrambled at the moment and remembering to do the simplest task is quite a challenge if I don't fall asleep first lol....(hoorah for postdromes)

it has indeed been an exciting last few days... maybe a little too much excitement? lol... what can I say... migraine... it's a party! :P

Got to keep on trooping I guess..

apparently I just burnt my toast... I forgot I even had bread in the toaster! lol...oops! I'm so glad my partner and I don't have children just yet... could be a rather disasterous outcome...
