has anyone gotten a headache/migraine from an antidepressant that would just not go away?

First, the answer to your question, just for myself, No. I take an SSRI, Celexa, as a migraine preventive, and I haven't had any headaches from it. But I don't seem very prone to head pain, other than migraines.

Hi bluewoman,
Welcome to MyMigraineConnection. I hope you don't mind if I ask a few questions first. Have you been taking your SSRI long? Is it a headache or Migraine? This article may help you Is It Migraine? Tension-Type Headache? What? Did your head pain begin right after you started taking your SSRI? This would be something you may want to talk to your doctor about. Continous Migraine pain lasting longer than 72 hours without a four-hour, pain-free break while awake may be Status Migrainous, and needs medical attention. Click HERE for more information. |

my headache/migraine started six months ago when i developed postpartum depression.. they put me on zoloft, then lexapro. the whole time i had this horrible headache and nothing was showing up on mri or other exams. anyway i recently weaned off the lexapro and the headache thank goodness went away. it was continuous for six months. well unfortunately the ppd came back and i am now being put on cymbalta but unfortunately as soon as i started it "the headache" came back. it is mostly on the side of my head between my temple and behind my eye and it will switch sides. it is very painful! i got really bad when i went off the medication so i know i need if for a while longer but i am not sure what to do about these headaches. they are obviously caused when something messes with my serotonin!!
any suggestions would be very welcome |

bluewoman - two thoughts - one is that it would be really good to have the headaches diagnosed and figure out if they're migraines or not, because how to treat them depends on that. The other is that if SSRIs are giving you headaches, could you explore with your doctor other types of anti-depressants? They are not all ssris!

Add a droolie welcome hug to the pile!
I agree with the others. You really need to address this with your doctor and get a firm diagnosis on this, so that the two of you can make a plan of action. If it is the SSRI, then perhaps a different class of anti-depressant would help. Hugs and good luck with this. Dragondrool Forum Moderator ~~8=:>>>> |

Hi bluewoman!
Welcome to the site! Headache is a side effect of both Lexapro and Cymbalta. That being said, this is of course a potential side effect and may not effect everyone who is on the drug. Interestingly enough, Lexapro (an SSRI) and Cymbalta (an SNRI) are both used as Migraine Preventives Have you been diagnosed with Migraines? Or is it just this new headache you get with the antidepressants? Welcome to the forum! We look forward to getting to know you better. I'm sorry you are having such a rough time with ppd. Would you mind one more question? Did the headache come when the ppd started or after you started taking the antidepressants? I seem to be a bit confused on that.
Headache can be a symptom of depression, as well as a potential side effect of some antidepressant medications. As some of the others said, maybe a different class of antidepressants, like the older tricyclics or Wellbutrin, Remeron, or Desyrel could be tried. The other thing to keep in mind is that it can take up to three months for our bodies to adjust to certain medications and we see a reduction in head pain.

I haven't had headache problems with my antidepressants, but Topamax gave me a headache, which I thought was terribly unfair.
Six months ago, I switched from Effexor to Cymbalta. It may have made my head a little better--we changed a couple of other things at the same time, so it's hard to know. I didn't develop postpartum depression, but I have a diagnosis of Major Depression and intend to take antidepressants the rest of my life. I also take Wellbutrin. Gret |

I'm not any SSRI's, so I can't help with your question from my own experience but I agree with Megs, it's something I would definately discuss with my doctor to see what my other options are.
I also wanted to stop by and welcome you to the forum Laura Forum Moderator |
