Wow, so suddenly my really bad 3 week migraine lifted on its own! YaySmiler But now it's been replaced by a tension headache! Eek! I got it yesterday and now it's back today. I know you can have both types of disorders at the same time, but this is so unexpected. I've never really had tension heaches before. Is this something that I just need to learn to live with or is there preventative therapy for this too? I've tried taking medication (Tylenol and Midrin) for it but haven't had any success! Any suggestions? Tomorrow I'll call my neuro's office and ask for advice too.

I have a big problem with tension-type headaches too, especially since they tend to trigger a Migraine unless stopped quickly. When mine became chronic, my specialist added Zonegran to my regimen. It not only stopped the TTH, it helped with Migraine prevention too. The same medications that can help with Migraine prevention can also help with the tension headaches. Have you mentioned this to your doctor yet?

The generally long periods of time between my Migraines are the result of working with a Migraine specialist to refine my preventive regimen. You can see my current regimen HERE.

Oh, no! I hadn't thought about tension headaches triggering migrainesFrowner I haven't talked to my doctor about it yet. I just had my first one yesterday, and it continued today. I have to call him early next week, though, to tell him how my Zonegran Smiler is doing. It's been two weeks and so far I haven't noticed any improvement (I actually got worse for a while), but it's still early. The side effects are really tolerable compared to other meds I've tried. I'll make sure to mention this to him! Unfortunately, I'm "in between" doctors right now. The one I've been seeing was kind enough to let me know he feels I should see a more specialized doctor, so my last appointment was kind of a bon voyage. I'm stuck waiting until May 4th before I can see the new doctor, but I'm on a cancellation list to see if they can get me in sooner. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Solveig--Thanks for your reply! I'm not familiar with what a TENS Unit is. Can you explain to me what it does?

Hopefully, TTH won't be a Migraine trigger for you, but I thought I'd mention that to you.

Where do your tension headaches start? Many of mine begin in my neck and shoulders. I had a TENS unit from shoulder surgery, and Dr. Young showed me where on my neck and shoulders to apply TENS for TTH. For me, if a tension headache is starting there, the TENS will stop it about 85% of the time.

Sorry about the wait, but glad you have an appointment. I'd suggest logging these tension headaches on your Migraine diary to keep track of them.

I'm noticing the first signs in my jaw, especially at the joint. It feels like it's getting really tight, like I'm clenching (but I'm not). Then I start to notice it in my neck, right behind my ears. Does this sound weird? It does to me. I have the "band like" feeling around my head, like someone is pulling something around it really tight. Sometimes it almost feels like a vice grip. There's a slight pulsing quality to it too. No nausea, physical activity doesn't bother me, no sensitivity to light or sound. I don't remember ever having this type of headache before though.

I was at the chiropractor today, and he did the usual massage and accupressure and said my muscle were super tight. After he did the treatment, I felt better for a while but then it crept back in on me. The Midrin seems to help but only for a while and then I have to keep taking more (not good for my already sensitive stomach Frowner). I think I almost prefer the migraines to this!

Definitely sounds like TTH, but you do need your doctor to confirm when you have your appointment. You're not taking Midrin more than 2 or 3 days a week are you? Are you able to try napping when one starts?

You're welcome. A good diary can be very helpful to you and your doctor in trying to spot patterns and triggers.

If you're looking to learn more about TENS Units, we just posted a new article about them over on the Chronic Pain site: TENS Unit for Pain

Hope this helps!

Normally I don't take Midrin or oral pain medicines at all (I use Migranal and Compazine for my migraines). I had a endoscopy done a couple months back, and we found some fairly extensive damage done to my stomach from all of the meds over the years, which completely explained why I was having such difficulty taking them. I've only used Midrin 2 days this week and that's probably all because I'm at home the rest of the weekend so I have less stress and opportunity to take naps (my favorite remedy!). I'll be really careful not to overuseSmiler. Thanks for the reminder! No one ever told me about rebound headaches until they thought it was already too late. michelleSmiler

Hi there Michelle.

I started using a TENS unit about 6 months ago and I LOVE it. Big Grin When I feel the tension building in my neck and shoulders I slap on my pads and plug myself in. My insurance didn't cover it so I purchased one from my pharm. with a prescription from my pain doc. They gave me a deal because I basically paid for the renovations in the store....( you know spending all my money on drugs there!!)

Just need to follow your doctors instructions on where to place the pads, how long to use etc. and off you go. It is certainly worth a try.
Good luck

I love my TENS for fibro stuff in my upper back and shoulders. Sometimes I can shortcircuit the pain and then be good for a solid month. They aren't cheap, but it's worth every penny.

Hey.

Sorry that my wife Sol didn't respond about what a TENS unit is. Things have been crazy around here with her health as of late and we haven't been on the boards quite as often.

Looks like others have responded so thats cool. Smiler

My wife had the TENS for only a week before insurance decided they won't cover it since the unit hasn't been "approved" for migraines. This irks me but for now we have given the unit back and are trying to get another one approved for her lupus related pain. Had the doctor wrote the referral for "neck pain" or "tension headaches" it would have been approved so they say.

Anyways, I hope that your tension headaches have gone by the wayside and haven't triggered any migraines (as they can in my wife and others).

Peace,

Dave
