Hello everyone,

I've battled with migraines since I was 17, I am now 27. During the first 5 years the attacks were severe, but fortunately it seemed to quiet down during for the following 3 years. Over the past 18 months the migraines have awakened from their dormant stage and it's now worse than ever. It gets to the point where I am actually taken to our local hospital's trauma unit during a severe attack.

I am now keeping a diary and have so far established that bananas are a major trigger for me, as is avocados and my usual cup of tea. But the one that I'm mos wondering about is Marmite. I eat some Marmite on toast about twice a week, and my doctor has suggested that this could be a trigger for me. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Cornflakegirl!

Welcome to MyMigraineConnection!

When you have a moment, please take a look at our START HERE folder to read about our forum guidelines and policies for a good online experience.

Another good place to start is: Learning About Migraines and Headaches - Where To Start Migraines and Headaches - Where To Start and

Food triggers are fairly common! http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/triggers-29502-5.html This actually might be more helpful- since you already know that you have food triggers- it's a http://www.healthcentral.com/migraine/docs/trigger-foods-workbook.pdf checklist with a lot of the more common ones listed, and even some less common Migraine triggers. It helped me a LOT, as you can check off foods and beverages and other edibles that could be triggers!

As for the tea itself- could it be something you put in the tea? sucralose, nutra-sweet, milk? Could it be the caffeine in the tea?

Anyhow, take a look at those articles, and let us know what you think!

Welcome again!
arti I'm also triggered by bananas.

I've never tried it, but I know Marmite has a lot of yeast in it. Some people do trigger off of yeast. We've had people mention triggering off of fresh bread around here before. It might be worth it to try and eliminate it for awhile and see what happens.

Hello!

I have often seen yeast listed as a migraine trigger.

I experimented with Nutritional Yeast a few years ago - recommended to me as a diet supplement - and concluded that for me it wasn't a strong trigger but was a trigger.

Since Marmite has a large amount of yeast in it, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a trigger. Try taking it out of your diet and see how you do.

Good luck Smiler

Hi MoniMe,

I registered on this forum after my last attack, which was a particularly bad one.

I already knew the biggest or most common triggers, and since I never consume any of that stuff I started doing further research to try and establish which secondary items I should exlude from my diet. The list is long and I don't eat everything on it, but this month I've excluded a few of the items that I eat on a regular basis (even if it's not daily). So for this month I've chosen: Marmite, Peanut butter, tuna, licorice, avocado, and tomatoes. There's still loads more that I can exclude from my diet, but I'm starting with these few and I'm happy to report that I haven't had a migraine in the past month.

Like I said, I already don't eat chocolate or drink alcohol or coffee, so I'm exluding these new items in addition to the more obvious no-no's. And I must say, of all the things I can't eat I really miss bananas the most.

Bottom line: nothing you put in your mouth will ever taste as good as healthy feels Smiler
