A few years ago our two plum trees that we planted started to produce in earnest and I had my worst year of migraines since I was a kid. I eventually realized red plums are on a number of trigger lists. I stopped eating them and my headaches went back to a more typical frequency.
Can anyone tell me what it is in the plums that is a trigger? If I cook them will they be safe? I miss my favorite non berry fruit and have PILES of them. I am constantly making smoothies for the kids and add them into our apple sauce but I never eat any of them because I don't want to have an off day. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, JayS. |

Fledgling |
Red Plums contain Tyramine as well other foods such as: red wine, beer, chocolate, yogurt, processed meats, sausages, chicken livers, avocado, aged cheese, citrus, potato, pickled herring, pineapple, tomato, yeast extracts, spinach, eggplant, raspberry, and canned fish, so it may be that you just consumed too much of this and that is why you were getting such frequent migraines. Have you ever heard of stackable triggers? I am pretty sure there is a link here on mymigraineconnection. You may have just stacked the Tyramine in your diet with all the red plums or you could have consumed other foods along with the red plums that also had the Tyramine in it. It is really important to keep a migraine diary and a food journal with you are trying to eliminate your triggers caused by food.
Hope this helps and welcome to our gang. Nicole |

For information about Migraines, a good article to begin with is Learning About Migraines - Where to Start. Nicole is right, we do have some great articles about triggers to take a look at: Common Migraine Triggers Triggers Podcast Good luck and please keep us posted! Laura Forum Moderator |
