Splenda gives me a 3 day migraine every time. Be careful, it's hidden in lots of things low calorie foods too. It's called something else but I can't remember. Maybe someone else knows it's "alias".

Splenda, aspartame, sucralose, saccharin - they all trigger me. My new doc told me maybe high fructose corn syrup may also be a trigger, and I should watch it for a while. I never thought about it. Usually with the other sweeteners, it is an instant migraine, not a stackable trigger thing. I know the high fructose corn syrup does not do that to me, but it could be a stackable trigger, I guess. Has anyone else had any issues with this? What about artificial colors? He mentioned that, too. I watch for artificial flavors, but for some reason I have never thought about artificial colors. I love Mountain Dew. I have cut back, but have not quit it yet and don;t really want to. It is my favorite source of caffeine!! Any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

Sherry, in general I have a lot more trouble with the artificial sugars/sweeteners - Splenda, aspartame, sucralose, saccharine, high fructose corn syrup. Natural sugar doesn't bother me as much, but I still can't tolerate a high level of it. All of the sweeteners are stackable triggers, but the artificial ones are the worst for me.
Then again, in general, any artificial additives give me problems. The less food has been processed, the fewer problems I have. -MJ my blog: http://rhymeswithmigraine.blogspot.com/ “HOPE CAN GROW FROM THE SOIL OF ILLNESS!” This is the theme of 2008’s National Invisible Chronic Illness Awareness Week in September. Hi Sherry -
I've been off sucralose/splenda for about 12 days now and haven't had a migraine in 10 - I have no idea if it's linked. but I'm going to try putting the splenda back in and see what happens. I'm like MJ, I can't tolerate much sugar either, and if I have a lot of caffeine I definitely have more migraines. It's tricky to figure it all out. But my body seems to tell me I'm better if I don't push up my energy level (like with sugar or caffeine) - just keep it more even keel. BTW Sherry - if you go to your user profile here on the site and hit edit and put that ticker code into your signature there, the ticker will show instead of the code. - Megs Free our brains from migraine pain my blog: www.meganoltmanfreemybrain.typepad.com E-course on Managing Life with Migraine at www.takebackyourlifefrommigraine.com |

Splenda (Sucralose) is a HUGE trigger for me. I see those yellow packets and wince. All of the other artificial sweeteners are fine and dandy for my head, so- as someone said earlier about watching for splenda in diet foods- my usual thought process is "how did they reduce the calories that much. Must be splenda" Then I read the label, and poof, about 9/10 times, I'm correct!

That's what I did - I used the HTML code, is that not the right one? I just took it off and may try again later - I don't really feel like it right now. Thanks, though. Sherry "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." ~ Plato c. 427-347B.C. |

I believe you need to use the first code shown on the TickerFactory page- "BB Code" for it to work...

I agree as a general statement, moderation in all things is key. Having said that, insoluble fiber in whole grains and vegetables are a major problem for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (like me). We can only eat it in small amounts, and only with a soluble fiber food also. Basically, what we used to call "roughage" is rough on the IBS stomach and what we used to call "starches" are easiest on our IBS tummies. So there's an exception to every rule. But yeah, our moms said eat well-balanced meals, a protein, a starch and a fruit or veggie. And they were/are right!! As far as artificial sweeteners, like Teri, they aren't a problem for me, but I don't have any food triggers. Thank goodness. At least there's something I don't have to worry about! LauraSue. (I'm 55, have had severe migraines for over 4 years due to menopause, plus I have fibromyalgia. I take Imitrex plus Anaprox as an abortive and am working with my migraine specialist to find a preventive. I keep a detailed migraine diary and have made significant lifestyle changes to reduce my risk of migraines.) |

I went 2 yrs using splenda on a daily basis and never had an issue. I think any migraine sufferer could be sensitive to it. But if you never noticed a problem, it probably isn't one for you.

Welcome Misty.
I used to be able to drink diet soda, but just about the time my migraines became chronic, I became sensitive to the aspartame. Deb [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/] |

Any artifical sweetners will trigger mine. I have found that this is hard for people who don't suffer to understand. Especially with Splenda because they think this is just concentrated sugar. I showed one lady the back of a Splenda packet and all the stuff that's in it, and that shut her up! LOL

The interesting thing I found out about Splenda - the reason diabetics can eat it (even though it's made from sugar) is because it doesn't get absorbed by the body at all - just goes straight through and out of the body. Of course, that doesn't stop it from triggering migraines in some of us.

I've actually found that I can tolerate the amount of aspartame or splenda that would be in one can of diet soda - but any more and I can guarantee a headache. I keep expecting that I'll get more sensitive, but it hasn't happened so far. I would never have expected it to be dose-related, but it is.
My father gets instant migraines with aspartame, but not Splenda. We're all different. I echo others' advice though - read those labels! I don't like my kids to have artificial sweeteners just on general principle, and recently I discovered that one of their favorite brands of granola bars had recently snuck Splenda into it! Can you imagine? Lynne |
