Hi

I am writing on behalf of my friend. She is in deep trouble and no doctor has been able to get to the root cause of her Migraine.

She is 6 months pregnant, when she was 1 month pregnant she stated having severe migraine pains (which she never had before) and when this pain starts she goes completely unconscious for 30-40 minutes.

When the pain starts 1) Blood pressure stays normal 2) No fever either.
Tests so far:
1) all tests come up normal
2) she had a CT scan and report came normal

She can only take limited medicines because she is pregnant. This migraine happens 3 to 5 times in a week and she goes completely unconscious at least 3 times in a week. We took her to hospital loads of time in this condition; one day this Migraine started and she went completely unconscious in front of the doctor and doctor said he has no idea why this is happening.

Please help. What should we do?

Jordon,

Welcome to the forum! Our goal is to provide everyone with the information and support that we all need to manage our Migraines and/or headaches. To that end, we consider this a “safe harbor,” where nobody tries to sell us anything, and we all use “family-friendly” language so parents are comfortable letting their children read the forum with them.

Please take a few minutes to review our policies and guidelines along with the other information in the START HERE folder. For information about Migraines, a good article to begin with is Learning About Migraines - Where to Start.

I'm so sorry your friend is going through all of this right now. My heart goes out to her! I can only imagine how scary this must be for her and for you too. She's very lucky to have such a good friend as yourself.

You guys are doing the right thing by seeking immediate medical assistance. Hopefully, they'll be able to figure out what is going on with her.

The one thing I'm really curious about is that you said she's never had any type of Migraine pain before. Did her doctor diagnosis her with Migraine? There are several types of Migraine that she could possibly have, take a look at them and see what you think:

Types of Migraines and Headaches

Please continue taking your friend to the doctor until they can come up with some kind of answers for her. Be persistent and please let us know what the doctor says, okay?

All my best to her Group Hug

Jordan,

MRI and other tests usually do come back "normal" with Migraine disease, so that's no surprise.

Hormonal fluctuations can be a big Migraine trigger, and it's not unusual for women to experience their first Migraines during pregnancy.

What IS unusual is your description of her "going unconscious." This is not at all common for Migraine.

I'd suggest that she get herself to a Migraine and headache specialist. It’s important to note that neurologists aren’t necessarily Migraine and headache specialists. Take a look at the article Migraine and Headache Specialists - What's So Special? If she needs help finding a Migraine specialist, check our listing of Patient Recommended Migraine and Headache Specialists.

Yes, pregnancy does limit what medications she can take, but a good specialist will get to the bottom of the problems and find treatments for her.

The generally long periods of time between my Migraines are the result of working with a Migraine specialist to refine my preventive regimen. You can see my current regimen HERE.

My neurologist has pointed out to me that migraines can go away during pregnancy or show up. But often, because these symptoms are related to hormones active during pregancy will go away as soon as the pregnancy is over. But don't take this advice from me. See a neurologist for sure, but know that this showing up during pregnancy is not unusual, although it is very very difficult.
