Here is a crazy question I thought was worth throwing out there.

I've read some old threads regarding various tinted glasses and how they help with some light triggers. (Ex. Pink tints were helpful to someone for harsh indoor lighting. Polarized lenses for outside sunlight.)

I find that on Rain gray days I wear my polarized sunglasses to cut down on the glare when I drive, especially when my head is hurting. Has anyone used a specific tint of sunglasses found to be useful to reduce glare on overcast days and doesn't make things as dark as the polarized lenses?

I have perscription yellow tinted glasses. They are 40% yellow for glare. I use them at night when driving, and really any other time unless it's really sunny. When it's really bright I stick with sunglasses.

that's a good idea. i wonder if anyone would make me 40% yellow glasses- to wear over my contacts. (which I need to update the RX soon anyway)- so as long as I have to go for an appt, maybe I can get a discount on bundling things up!

You probably could. When I first got them years ago, my doctor made them weaker so that I could wear them with my contacts. Plus my perscription is not that strong anyway. I'm sure you could just get the glasses with no script lenses though.

The only real reason why I got them tinted back in the day was because I had a problem seeing at night with the glare. It would be even worse if it was raining out. My doctor tinted them and ever since I've been good to go. You can get tint no problem, you don't need a special thing for it, just request it.

Regardless of tint, it's extremely important that the lenses be a good optical grade. If they're going to be worn in sunlight, they need to have UV protection. Polarization can be added to any glasses, even those with no tint, and it's highly recommended to reduce glare.

FWIW, my ophthalmologist recommends a neutral gray tint. I find that I have to really be strong about that when I have glasses made or the grey ends up with a bit of red to it. So, I just tell them when I order them to be sure it's a pure gray, or they'll have to make them again.

FWIW, tinting doesn't cut the glare from UV lights for me. I have to have polarized glasses. They can be expensive, and I must have a doctor's note to wear sunglasses (like my "cheapie" clip-ons from Wal-Mart) in my classroom.

But that polarization can save me from Migraines, so it earns its cost back within 2 years, max.

I always have my shades on! Mine are super dark oxblood red. I haven't gone the polarized route yet.

Frankly, I just walked into the optometrist with my sunglasses and said "put the darkest lenses you have in them"... I find they really help me. I don't tend to go out much in the day anyway though, at least not from 10-3pm when the sun is worst.

I've also been toying with the idea of buying cataract glasses and gluing rhinestones on them to make them all bling-y Wink

Just bringing back this thread--
It's been quite rainy and overcast here lately and I've been wearing my sunglasses almost constantly while driving and when outside. It has helped IMMENSELY with keeping the sunlight trigger down. I use gray tinted glasses (and occasionally brown-tinted ones).

You can get inexpensive prescription glasses from zenni optical online so don't sweat it if you feel like you need that kind. [Yes, my family's ordered several pairs and has been very happy with them.]

Once again, I'm amazed at how sunlight triggers me. I can walk in and out of deep shade and feel the Migraine 'power on' and recede just. like. that. Whoa....

These are great ideas. I have a very mild prescription, but adding a tint to cut down the glare for night driving sounds like it would be a huge help.

I can get another pair of glasses this year, so I will try that.

Thanks,

Monica

Morning,

Just an FYI, while I need sunglasses more now with migraine disease, as a person with blue eyes I've had to always were sunglasses for glare in any weather for ages. It became more pronounced when I got contacts at 16. People look at me strangely for wearing them in the rain, but i refuse to squint all the time.

Another good place for glasses/sunglasses is "SEE." The price you see on the frames is for a complete pair of single-focus glasses. Polarized lenses add $40 more.

Prices are fairly reasonable. Frames are very stylish. They are on line, SEE.com, I think. Sallie dragged Matt & me into their shop during the first day of Freshman Orientation this past Monday.

SEE didn't have frames I like in the shop, so I may just have to look online. My optometrist has frames I like, but he is more expensive than SEE.

And here I thought I was the only person who sometimes wore sunglasses when driving at night...

I also have to wear my sunglasses even on cloudy days. I have huge prescription sunglasses that I wear every time I go outdoors, even at night if I have a migraine. I sometimes have to where them indoors. I never paid attention to the tint. My regular glasses have the transition lenses. However, they do me absoutely no good.
