I had been migraine free for six months. Then WHAM!!! The weather has decided to give Illinois multiple fronts and rain. I tried all the techniques and medicine to eleveate the pain just a little bit, but all I got was more pain. My headache specialist wasn't that helpful telling me all I needed to do was sleep. I had this headache for two weeks and three days!! I felt like a zombie. When I finally reached prodome, all I did was sleep more!!! Crying

My doctor also told me that fronts and humidity do not trigger migraines. I told him if he remembered last summer and he agreed. Then he told me that the new research indicates there is no connection.

These researchers also say that with a full moon there are not any changes in ER's, nursing home, or hospitals. What do they think is happening???

Now I have been headache free for two days and I'm lovin' it.

Ranting over. Head Banging

OK-right. I guess if there's no connection at all, then the fact that barametric changes downloaded from the weather site has nothing to do wtih corresponding to my migraines at all. My migraines correspond to barametric changes WITHOUT FAIL. I have the data to prove it! They can say what they want, but I know what hits me!

What new research? I see the Migraine journals every month, and I've seen nothing on this. What kind of doctor are you seeing?

I'll be at the American Headache Society conference next week and can guarantee that if there's anything to what he's saying, it will be reported there. BUT, just a couple of years ago, there was a great deal of info at that conference about how weather changes CAN trigger Migraines.

What was he xxxx> OK, I won't finish that thought.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Mad

The generally long periods of time between my Migraines are the result of working with a Migraine specialist to refine my preventive regimen. You can see my current regimen HERE.

Last fall my neurologist told me that last summer was the worst she'd ever seen for migraines, and her phone rang off the hook all summer--due to the weather.

What you had in IL last week came to NY this week. After hot sunny weather, we have had 2 days worth of thunderstorms. My head has been aching since Sunday. Thumbs Down

What in the name of Pete is your doctor thinking? Doesn't he READ anything? Hair Raising Here are 3 articles from peer reviewed journals that say otherwise:
Prospective analysis of factors related to migraine attacks: the PAMINA study. (2007). Wober. C., Brannath, W. et al. Cephalalgia, 27, 304-14 Available full text from EBSCOHost

The Effect of Weather on Headache (2004) Prince, P., Rapoport, A. et al. Headache, 44, 596-602

Weather and Emergency Room Visits for Migraine Headaches in Ottawa, Canada (2006) Villeneuve, P, Szyszkowicz, M, et al. Headache: The Journals of Head and Face Pain, 46, 64-72

As you can see from the titles of these journals, they are not some obscure journal that have nothing to do with headache. These are the journals any doctor treating migraine should be reading.

It burns me up Mad for professionals (of any ilk) to make statements and not be able to back them up. Or (worse?) be unaware of the current research in their field. Soap Box Ok, I am off my soapbox (for now, anyway).

It's AMAZING!!! Dr. K. gave me Diamox to try for barometric changes. We had an unexpected one this afternoon at 7p.m. They didn't predict it last night. My migraine hit at 4 a.m. The weatherman let me down. I'd have tried the Diamox if he'd have mentioned something might be going on.

One of our boarders' husband works for that tv channel. She said today that that particular weatherman's contract will be up at the end of July and it's not being renewed. Maybe he could go be your doctor's weatherman. I think they deserve each other!!!!

Dr. K also gave me Diamox for weather related migraines. In my case, because I also wake up with migraines, I take Diamox every night in addition to my other preventive.

Here's what Dr. K said in an Ask the Clinician question regarding weather related migraines and barometric pressures:

Barometric Pressure ATC Question

Take care!

Someone forgot to tell my noggin that weather isn't a trigger. We had a severe thunderstorm roll through last night and I woke up with an awful migraine this morning. Thankfully, my Axert is working it's magic but if it wasn't the weather that was the trigger, I'd like to know what it was?! Grrrr!!!

Naw! You're not crazy!

I'll look forward to seeing this article from this doc, too. Wouldn't it be grand if we could borrow him our brainbuckets during big weather shifts?

I get acephalgic migraines and while I don't always get the pain, I get dizziness and confusion with light sensitivity and even I discovered that weather is a key player in my symptoms. Especially low barometric pressure.

*nods*

Yep. Most of my acephalgic migraines come with weather shifting, too. I go braindead and start to drool, and it's all over from there. Luckily, it's been a while since I've had one.
