So, call me a bit slow, but I've finally made the connection that some of my worst migraines seem to be occurring during my physical therapy sessions. At first, I thought it was the exercise, but now I'm wondering if it could be all the latex in the physical therapy room. I mean it is everywhere, and I am severely allergic to it, as in anaphylaxis reaction. What do you think? Am I being paranoid? Or could I be on to something?

I was sitting right by a bunch of latex therabands when my latest migraine turned from a "normal" migraine into a hemiplegic migraine. Could my severe allergy be triggering my severe migraine attacks?

Hi Jaclyn,

Yes, certainly severe allergies or anything that puts our body in a stressful condition can trigger a Migraine attack. Other things that may trigger attacks include dehydration, certain foods and smells, too much or too little sleep and changing barometric patterns. Our Migraine trigger page has lots of good information, which you can find HERE

Hi Jacklyn,

My migraines are triggered primarily by my allergic reactions. I developed asthma with some atypical symptoms in 2007, but it wasn't diagnosed correctly until a trip to the Mayo Clinic in 2008. I'd had typical, not hemiplegic migraines, for a long time, but as my asthma got worse, so did my migraines. I can sometimes prevent my migraines by treating my asthma as soon as it starts with an inhaler right, but not always.
It's been difficult to coordinate treatment for these overlapping conditions. Hope you have success in that area.

Best regards, Anne

Hi Jacklyn,

Physical Therapy triggers migraines for me. As does Chiropractics, some yoga, some very deep massage, and trigger point injections. For me I think it has to do with moving / stretching my upper spine and the muscles in my neck and shoulders in ways that are a little too extreme for me.

Even doing some of the PT exercises which focus on my neck and shoulders can trigger a migraine. So I take it very easy when I do them.

Maybe that is something to consider too.

Take care!

Monica
