What exercises do you like to do that are different from the rest of the year, that you look forward to doing?

Um... none anymore.

my answer used to be swimming. Frowner

maybe frisbee? Or maybe not... I can't throw the thing well to save my life.

I don't play golf... The batting cage is open year round here, so that doesn't count...

I guess I'm drawing a blank here.

There's much more to do in the garden/landscape in the summer. But only for a couple of hours in the morning. Too hot and glare-y. Digging and planting and moving pots and weeding can be strenuous, if not aerobic.

I also don't have the option of waiting till mid-morning to let the dog walk me. Too hot. And he gets awfully insistent.

No option of leaving the door cracked so the mutt can go in and out. Too hot and too many mosquitoes.

I seem obsessed about the heat today. They're predicting 94 today, with heat index around 100. This is a little early for this kind of heat. And we're in a drought. My lawn is a mess. I didn't water enough last summer -- a very dry summer -- and have a lot of winter kill. I'm considering a sprinkler system. Of course, I've been considering one for at least 10 years.

The new toilets have come in. Now, to get them installed.

In the summer I do miles and miles of walking with my book. Or at least I did until this one. Now that I'm doing concessions at the swimming pool, I find that constant running back and forth all day to be replacing my walks, at least for now. Plus, since I'm at a different pool, I lost my established walking route, so if and when I go walking every day again, I'll have to figure out a new one.

Since i'm not the type of person who likes to be outside much, I bought a foot peddler to do indoors. To sit in a chair and peddle! Its a great exercise Since I don't have room to get a stationary bike! Or If I do have the energy to walk our 4 year old dog! Or my Dance Revolution but i'd have to have tons of energy for that. But these are my exercises for the summer.
Basically outdoor exercise:

I've been thinking of getting one of those foot peddling things... It could be done at work too- major bonus. Do you like it? Is it worth the money? Do you actually use it? I'm afraid it'll sit in the corner like all of my other "great ideas" Roll Eyes

I also have Dance Dance Revolution. I'm awful at it. Like really awful. It was supposed to help me get through physical therapy (the first time)- when my whole lower back also was screwed up... But the muscle relaxers at the time made it IMPOSSIBLE to keep up with the music. I think frustration may have done it in... But- now that you've mentioned it, I may have to try again now that I'm off all of those meds!

Thanks for the ideas. Oh, and I'm trying to track down a pool that doesn't use chlorine... apparently some studies are showing that chlorine may make allergies and asthma worse. While I don't have those, if there is a large enough demand for other chemical treatment (like Ozone-- actually cheaper than Chlorine), then someone's gonna build a pool like that.

Oh, and cool factoid of the day- Walt Disney Water Parks don't use chlorine- they use Ozone! Not that I can afford to go there right now... but it's still cool!

There are also some non-chlorine block products that pools are treated with, but I'm not sure of the chemical involved there. Others use bromine instead of chlorine. A tipoff to bromine, so I understand, is that it might be a little cloudy.

BD,
YES, the foot peddler was worth getting it and paying for it. But one word of suggestion, Please do not get the cheapest modle with the velcrow straps on the foot. It does not last very long. I went ahead and bought a little more expensive one, with after from saving a bit I was able to afford. And the foot straps are not velcrow at all! Plus it keeps track of how many times that you have peddled, and other things as well.

Yes, I used the foot peddler things almost daily. Sometimes I think i'd rather use the foot peddler then the Dance revolution, But it depends on what my energy level is. If I have high energy for the day i'll do the Dance Revolution. But If I have low energy for the day I will do the foot peddler. It IS VERY WORTH IT!

With the Dance Revolution, I had the hardest time getting use to it. But now keeping up with it i'm able to get up to the higher speeds in the beginning levels. It just takes time and much, much, much, needed patience. Which I didn't have at first. But now i'm glad that I kept up with it!

Thanks! Good to know also that I'm not the only one who had problems with the learning curve on DDR. I'm gonna break it out again once I get back from my weekend trip.

At the very least, even trying to keep up with it is decent exercise.

Its a very good exercise. Plus it gets the heart pumping. I can maybe do 10-15 minutes each time, But its so worth it and doing it each time for me helped me to not be so clumsy at it like I Was at first. Now all the ones under 100bmp are too slow for me!!!

For me doing anything outside feels great after 7 months of cooler rainy weather. I play sports with my older sons, run at the track, and when her lupus allows take nice slow walks with my wife, Sol.

She used to workout all the time but she was much younger (she's gonna KILL me for that) and healthier back then. She played college ball then semi pro so for awhle there she was working out 5 hours a day.

Now we focus on daily stretches, some slow low resistance biking on the stationary bike, and when her lupus allows walks outside. It has been hard on her going from total jock to someone that now gets excited over 20 mins of exercise.

Enjoy the summer!!!! Do what you can and get outside if your migraines allow. Nothing like fresh air.

Peace,

Dave

20 minutes of exercise is a great daily goal, and I think that its better then nothing. Some Dr.'s I know want us to get more but they don't realize how much energy it takes to do even 20minutes. I think is more then enough for me. especially with Chronic Fatigue. With good weather this week in Oregon even if its cloudy I hope to get outside at least once this week. Even though its halfway over the week.!
