My doctor wants me to try a DASH diet. I'm doing some reading, and frankly, it looks delicious! I'm also wondering how I can maintain it when I'm low in energy--or my head is pounding--and I don't feel like really "cooking." I've noticed the Mayo Clinic web site has some great recipes. Well, I ramble.

Has anyone had experience adding this type diet to a lifestyle that includes migraines?

Did you get the book? All I can find is little tidbits just saying it's low fat, nonfat dairy and a couple pictures of yummy food. Is it pretty much just a low fat diet? Or is it eating things in a proper order type of a thing?

We have a really good locally-produced medical Q&A show on Mississippi Public Radio. Dr. Rick talked about the DASH diet today. He said it wasn't a weight loss diet, but it was great for people with high blood pressure who had to control their salt intake.

A balanced diet can't be bad for you!

No, it's certainly not just a low-fat diet. It specifies a specific number of servings of different types of foods. It is oriented toward whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, and lean meats (but I have been a vegetarian for a long time.) I bought the book advertised on the dashdiet.org web site, and it's a wonderful book with very practical suggestions. I also got to talk to a dietician through a wellness program I'm in through my insurance, and that was very encouraging. Many people find their blood pressure much better after only two weeks on this diet, and some people who took blood pressure meds have been able to give them up!

This caught my eye because I work for the dairy industry and we promoted the DASH diet a few year back (and still do). You might check with your local dairy council for some free resources on the DASH diet or go to www.nationaldairycouncil.org. It's suppose to be a really good diet.
