I am 34 and have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and these darn migraines. I used to be able to exercise often, now it is 20 degrees out and I am thinking I could get Wii Fit! I put flax seed in my cheerios like a grandma. I am normal weight. My biggest failure is smoking. I cannot seem to stop. I try and succeed but then something (like my husbands affair) makes me start again. How do I get the willpower not to pick them up!!!!!??????????

How 'bout this? Don't let his betrayal take anymore of your health, life, and happiness away. Smoking will make you sick, don't let his "issues" make you stop smoking.
I'm sure the last you want to do is take another pill, but I have heard that Wellbutrin may be used to help quit smoking. Check it out with your doctor if you are unable to do it cold turkey or whatever it is you guys do..... I'm pulling for you!! |

Im not real big on pharmaceuticals, but my husband has used Zyban before and it REALLY worked. It's the same thing as wellbutrin, but a different dosage I guess. Not sure if you could take it with your migraine meds though...

I quit smoking four years ago with the help of Wellbutrin. I was supposed to be on it for several months but I only had to be on it for a little over a month, it worked that well for me. It also helped that it was just time for me to quit smoking, if that makes sense. I had tried before in the past and had been unsuccessful, but that time around I was serious and very determined about it like I'd never been before. I wanted to quit for my health and for the sake of my kids.
I wish you luck! I know you can do it, I'm pulling for you! By the way, I love my Wii Fit. Now that I'm tapering off of the Seroquel, I have more energy and plan on making the Wii Fit part of my routine again. Laura Forum Moderator |

I have a WiiFit, and I live in a COLD climate. I think the WiiFit is a great compromise for getting exercise in the winter. It's actually pretty fun, and some of the exercises are pretty tough at the advanced levels. Overall, though, it's just fun. If you're more coordinated than me, Dance Dance Revolution can help you burn a lot of calories too. Getting regular exercise might help you in your efforts to quit smoking as it increases the levels of natural endorphins in the brain.
But, in the meantime, is there a Smoker's Hotline in your state that you can call? These hotlines have been shown to be successful in helping people quit smoking because they can hook you up with the right resources for quitting smoking, they can sometimes give you free starter kits to get you going (nicotine gum, patches, coupons for medication, etc), and they provide support so that you don't feel like you're alone. Here are some numbers I looked up: Michigan Quit Smoking Coaching Hotline Free counseling for Michigan residents 1-800-480-7848 Free printed materials, coupons, quit kits 1-800-537-5666 American Cancer Society 1-800-227-2345 The ACS offers information on local cessation programs and provides smoking cessation literature. National Cancer Institute 1-800-422-6237 The National Cancer Institute provides literature on smoking cessation. While they provide individuals to go over the literature with callers, they are not trained counselors. |

One important thing is not to feel badly about yourself for having "failed" to quit smoking. If you do that, you will punish yourself by continuing to smoke, and you will be in a vicious cycle. No. You deserve to be congratulated for the effort that you made. Congratulate yourself for effort, not for success.
And the more times you try to quit, the more skills and experience you have with which to succeed! So "failing" is not a complete failure; you have the experience you gained from the previous attempt to help you the next time. Do you have friends and family who can support you in this effort? Is this something your husband can support you in? If someone is willing to be "on call" for you, whom you can contact if you are feeling like picking up a cigarette, maybe you can pick up the phone instead of a cigarette. Take it one hour, and then one day at a time. And I agree with Nancy; your husband should not be allowed to steal your health and well-being. You don't deserve that. |

Quitting smoking has been/is my big bugaboo, too. I'm 5 months into it, and I still think I want one at times. I refuse to buy a pack because I'll be too tempted to buy another, and another, and...
I smoked 2 cigarettes about 2 months ago. They tasted terrible and did nothing for me. This was after I had tapered off Chantix, which worked very well for me. I also don't like the smell of cigarette smoke as much as I did even 2 months ago. Why am I telling you all this? To let you know you have a "sister" who's a little further down the road than you are right now, who will help you, if you'd like. As far as your husband, may I suggest screaming into your pillow and then beating the everliving beejeebers out of it? I agree with Nancy - please try to not let his behavior determine yours. Easy to say, hard to do. Here's a Rebecca |

Thank you so much for your advice. I am finally chilling down from xmas and hiding all of this from his family.....who knew and know NOTHING about how horribly my heart is broken.
I am going to try again on New Years...Why is it always that day? I don't know what makes it so special, but at least I know I can do it before I am 35. On another subject, I am typing from my brand new laptop which I got from my JH with a wireless printer and mouse. I am starting my masters degree through the University of Phoenix in January---only 16-18 months. If I don't have a teaching job by then, I will be looking for a job that requires an MBA. It is so ridiculous how much money I am spending on my education to get a job around here. Michigan is the worst in the US, you know. You practically need a PHD to work at anywhere but McDonalds. So, JH buys agrees to let me go back to school, buys me this expensive laptop, but cannot talk to me and can BARELY spit out the words I love you. I asked him why and he said I don't know ?!?!?!!?I am spilling my heart out to him in emails, because it is the only way I can get him to know how I am feeling. Seems silly, but someone has to communicate somehow. Still nothing from him.....I told him I was giving him a certain timeline in my head to fulfill my needs because he obviously needs time, but if that timeline expires, we will be talking about other options. Migraines have been relativetly moderate, but have had some doozies and pretty daily. Well, This isn't the most cheeriest of xmas posts, but I wanted to get on to thank ALL of you for your kind words and friendship. They help me get through so much and it means alot to me. Have a wonderful holiday. Kristin |
