Hi all. I can't believe how many people suffer from migraines! I thought I lived in my own little world of pain and suffering. Anyhoo...I'm 37 and have had migraines for about 10 years. Mostly hormonal, but getting much worse with age. I've used Maxalt to treat up until now, but lately they've been unbearable ...especially teamed with teaching kindergarten. so...we're trying something new.
My pc just put me on topamax last week and I seem to be experiencing many of the oh so fun side effects...yikes.
Thanks for listening....

Welcome kdub!

Yes, about 36 million Americans suffer with Migraine Disease.

We here have about 1000 members now, and they are from all over... Smiler

I hope the Topamax help you out! Here is some info on it for you...

Topamax Profile

Dosage and Tapering Topamax for Migraine Prevention

Also, not sure if you are keeping a Migraine/Headache diary but they are very helpful in tracking your migraines and helping in your care.

And last but not least, I want to give you this: Migraine Preventive Medications: Too many options to give up!!! You mentioned you are getting some side effects with the topamax, I just want you to know, if they become to unbearable - talk to your doctor - there are other options out there. If the side effects you are experiencing are shortness of breath, difficulty breathing or chest pains, please call your doctor ASAP!

Of the side effects are those of tingling in the hands and feet, decreased hunger, slight cognative side effects....those are bothersome but may pass or become less noticable as you get to your recommended dose. See the Topamax Profile link for more info on this.

Welcome again!!! We look forward to hearing much more from you! Big Grin

Welcome to MyMigraineConnection.

Our moderators and members have given you great information, this is such a wonderful community, we're glad you found us!

It may take our bodies three months to adjust to new medication. During this period we may see a reduction in potential side effects, notice I'm using the word potential Smiler.

Topamax is best taken in a split dosage, twelve hours apart with a low starting dose and slow titration up. You can find more information on topamax dosing HERE.

Keep us posted on how you are feeling, ok?

Welcome,

The others have started you off with great information. Using the diary's can also help you keep track of what is going on with the prevenative. Sometimes all the changes do seem overwhelming. It can be tough.

Take care and let us know if there is additional information you need.
