I have a neurogenic bladder because of nerve damage in my back. I have overflow incontinence.
I have been tested for feeling in the bladder. I can only feel it when it's overful. I am seeing a Urologist and he's sending me for a cat scan and blood tests, then I will get a cystoscope. The urine test revealed blood in the urine. What am I in for??

Response from Dr. Jay Motola, HealthCentral's Urology Consultant
It sounds that you may have already had a urodynamic assessment which is a test that helps to determine if bladder function is present, and was used to help establish your diagnosis. If this is a neurogenic bladder, and you are in overflow incontinence, a means to empty your bladder must be established. Given your history of nerve damage, and without knowing exactly what the damage is, most likely this will damage is not correctable. Providing that you do not have any underlying handicap relating to your hands or arms, the most likely option that is suitable is the use of self clean intermittent catheterization which involves the placement of a catheter into a the urethra several times daily. Other options which are less desirable include a suprapubic cystotomy or an indwelling catheterization.

Dear Doctor,

If I need surgery ,is a stent to hold open my sphinter, or a sphinterotomy possible. I already wear protective briefs because I don't know when I am going to go.
Thanks,
Dan Keil

Hi,I also have an atonic/neurogenic bladder.I was on 9 yrs of self cathing and still had to use diapers for leaking and bowel incontinence.I have developed a severe reaction to all catheters now and get bad infections even from systoscopyies and other tests.I had a sphincterotomy done in 2000 as the only other choice i was given was a bypass and pouch. This worked well for about 3 to 4 yrs but the outer valve has scared closed again and now need to have it redone, hopefully last time.Doc says next time it will be bypass and bag time and still need diapers for bowels.A stent was looked at but passed on because of infections.
good luck with your choice
