I have been on Celexa for approximately 2 1/2 months and feel I'm doing well with this medication. Should I be prepared that I may have to be on medication for the rest of my life? I am in my early 30s.

The worst of the side effects are over, but I do feel tired a lot. It has affected intimacy with my spouse in a huge way, because I just don't feel like it. I don't feel sexy, I feel exhausted and not very good about myself right now. He is loving and understanding but is having a hard time with this and takes it very personally and feels rejected. Any suggestions? Do I just need to give the medication more time? I do realize that a side effect from my medication is a decrease in libido. Has anyone had similar issues? Thanks.

I was first put on antidepressants when I was 18 years old for severe depression, OCD and anxiety. My psychiatrist told me to expect to be on it for at least 5 years, longer if you are not adding in psychotherapy. I thought that he was completely crazy but it is now 10 years alter and I'm just coming off all psychotropic medications. Unfortunately, I can not afford psychotherapy, which would have helped decrease this time but I understand now why this time frame was suggested to me by my psychiatrist. Basically, I had to learn how to live depression, anxiety and OCD free and get use to living that way. I am now able to distinguish when I'm having an anxity attack and why and when I'm having a depressive episode.
I dont know why you are on celexa but since you've already started the medication, you should probably stick to it for longer then 2.5 months and not mess around with medications because if you relapse and go back on the Celexa, it may not work the same way it did initially, then you will be stuck with going on yet another med... I've been on 4 now.
As for the loss of libido, it's a given, especialy with SSRI's.. I went years without being physically attracted to men or wanting sex, it is an unfortunate side effect.
For me, it came down to choosing the lesser of two evils... did I want to live like I was dead (with depression) but still enjoy sex or live my life with little to no depression with the side effect of a low libido... seems to be a no brainer, especially for women who are more driven by emotion then sexual desire.

Good luck
