Hi to everybody!
I am new to this forum. I have been depressed my whole life. I first started learning about it when I was 29 years old. I was suicidal after the break up with my fiance after being friends for 11 years and only two weeks before the wedding. Thank goodness I had a friend who got me into counseling and from there I saw a psych and started meds. I remember clearly that I started to feel better on the ninth day of meds. This was about 1990 and many people I knew were very against meds, but I stayed on them, and have been on them ever since. I was a teacher and a foster parent.
Then later I adopted my daughter. Life got really complicated in many ways. Anyway I ended up in the area of AZ that we call "The Valley." City life has been hard for me but I can get better services for my daughter here. She has just been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder in the last three months. She is in a treatment center hopefully getting the help she needs to live with this problem. I know it will never go away and have to be managed daily, but hopefully we can learn to do it.
Last January me kidneys failed due to a medication I had to take for a serious skin infection called MRCA. I got the infection from one of my students. A very handicapped very poorly cared for teenage girl that had these severe skin sores over her body. Due to the infections and how badly I felt when they were being treated I lost that job. I then worked with Learning Disabled high school kids, a much better job for me. Last fall and winter I was very sick. The most noticable symptom was a horrible cough that just got worse for months until I had to be hooked up to an oxygen machine all the time. I was still trying to work. Finally on Jan 22 I saw the Dr. after he had run some blood tests and was thrown into the hospital with kidney failure. I started dialysis the next day. I have had several surgeries since then and often have complications that cause problems with my treatments. I am always tired and never feel good. I have no energy. I finally realized that part of this may be due to depression getting worse even though I am still on my meds. I am trying new meds now. The Dr is taking me off of Paxil and putting me on Elavil(spelling is probably wrong).

Has any one tried Elavil? How did you like it?\

Best Wishes to all, and looking forward to getting to know you.

Loretta

Dear Loretta,
Nice to read your post. I am from India, Bangalore, and am on a drug, Staloapam, for depression. The name is probably different over there in the USA.
Nice to hear about your daughter; hope she is getting on well wit hher treatment.
I have had this bout of depression since MArch this year; its lifting now, but was bad in the middle, when I thought of suicide. For most of my life I have lived in Delhi; I came to Bangalore 3 years ago. I think it is the shift to Bangalore that is a major problem. I still miss Delhi a lot. It just occurred to me that single parent adoption is not too easy or is very uncommon here in India.
Bye for now,
Srilatha
